epsom salts instead of dessicant?

I bought some moisture absorber stuff but I found it didn't last long before it got really hard and then I tried to bake it dry but it melted, and so I'm looking for an alternative as I can't get the good drierite or damprid varieties. Are cooked epsom salts in the bottom of a container just as good as dessicant?

People say that epsom salts work fine. Only drawback is that you have to bake them and then bust them up with a hammer after each use.
