When I made the topic, I was trying to be somewhat broad.  I guess I'm just trying to see what people enjoy coding in the most.  I enjoy coding in a certain language the most when I feel like I'm able to proficiently manipulate the data.

At work, I'm currently looking into alternatives to Simatic NET OPC server (Siemens S7) because I feel like we're paying too much ($600/machine).  I remember someone saying awhile back that python (which I've never coded in) is a frequently used language within this domain (OPC, controls environment, etc), so that's what got me thinking about this topic.

One favorite language?! You've got to be kidding me!  The power is behind multiple languages in tandem, take some HTML, combine with CSS, add Actionscript with PHP/MySQL and JavaScript integration and blow someones fucking mind!  Of course if you're the kind of programmer who likes to have all of the bases covered there's a lot of conditional logic to make sure that it works properly to some functional degree for everyone!

Actually I was thinking more of rich media applications that could be built around a Flash center to include streaming media, media servers for user interaction, database integration etc..

Though yeah, I did include HTML/CSS.  It's just impossible for me to choose just one, nothing like pigeon holing yourself in an industry that prompts in-depth and varied expertise :shrug:  I guess it's not a case that applies to every programmer and he did ask for a "favorite".  Again, impossible for me!

depends on the task at hand, but probably ruby, perl, and python.

C when necessary. C++ if i'm feeling particularly masochistic (read this blog by esr, particularly the comments if you don't already hate C++)

I love C, but I've been getting into python recently, I just don't find the use of coding in C anymore, I guess I'm getting lazy.

not lazy, just smart. hardware isn't where it was 10 years ago. for many applications, the savings in productivity you gain from using a higher-level language more than outweighs the performance savings of using C (esp than of using C++)

that said, for certain things, C is the best choice (eg, using a pure-ruby XML implementation is simply retarded, esp when ruby can bind with libxml) - but for most of those things, you will still be using a higher-level language atop of C libraries.

First of all, HTML/CSS aren't programming languages.  They are markup languages.  that's why javascript, a programming language, is needed to work with the html/DOM elements.

People still talking about python are so far behind the curve. "python conference" googles 280,000 results.  "ruby conference" googles 384,000.  And there's probably a lot more ruby blogs, and they are WAY more interesting.  One of my favorites is Giles Bowkett's.  If you're into music production, check out his probabilistic midi generator.  It is used for producing constantly changing drum loops (that average out to be the same).

So, the first reason for ruby being better than python is that a much cooler people use it for their much cooler projects.

Are there technical reasons for why cooler people choose to use ruby over python?  Here's a few debatable ones:

-Python is white-space sensitive.  Ruby is not.  I dont think programmers like the white-space formatting to define their code.  I certainly don't.

-Ruby blocks.  Search ruby blocks.

-Metaprogramming and OO.  Pythonists will argue that python is just as capable in these realms as Ruby.  Even if true, I think its still clunkier in python.

    * Blocks. They make iterations a breeze and so much more!
    * Everything’s an object. Being able to call methods directly on integers, strings, arrays, etc. greatly simplifies the method interfaces.
    * Metaprogramming. Injecting behavior at runtime opens up so many possibilities.

I agree with you on this point. I don't like it when a language dictates the style I am forced to use.  Let the language worry about semantics and let management worry about style.

i agree with both of you on this point. the company i work for mainly uses ruby (for in-house stuff in the team that i work with). as of late, i've been contributing on a few outside-of-my-group machine learning projects, and a lot of the existing code is python and c++. i absolutely detest the latter (in short, if you want performance, use C, if you want a higher-level language, use perl/ruby/python - c++ is a transitional fossil - great to show us how we got to where we are, but it should be extinct), and while the former has its benefits (namely, numpy & scipy) in general i don't like the way it forces me to think in a certain syntactical structure.

then again, i think a lot of the hype about python was that devs wouldn't have to worry about management looking over their shoulders and making sure they follow certain style guidelines (as those style guidelines are built into the language itself). so it always returns to the "is it a feature or is it a bug?" question

What's the difference between a tab character and a curly brace, apart from one being easier to type?

Differing tabstops is my biggest complaint.  I like two space indentation, except with continuation being four spaces.  I loathe the use of tabs.  One person using eight space tabstops, another person using four space tabstops, and yet another person using two space tabstops makes for horrid looking, unreadable code.  Using tabs in code should be illegal.

I can also use the "%" function of vi to match braces.  This makes it trivial for me to jump to the beginning or ending of a block.  Can't do that with tabs unless you are using a language specific IDE (yet another rant).

Meh, I have my IDE set to use 4-space tabs, but I don't really care. I indent code no matter what language I use, so Python just saves me time by cutting out the braces.
