Anyone thinking about survival lately?
    #9921555 -

Sometimes i think there's a real possibility we may have some choatic collapse of the system were used to. I was just woundering if this has prompted anyone to start preparing in anyway. I would like to hear.

First, i bought a couple 9mm's.  I also taught my girlfriend how to operate them correctly. keep a couple hundred rounds on hand.

This spring im doing a much bigger than usual vegitable garden.

been brewing wines to stockpile - don't want to be sober in a shitty world. It's also tradeable - my wine is excellent!

stockpiling useful stuff here and there, nothing major. stuff i could trade (soap) and stockpiled food. boots, jeans - i'l cruise through thrift stores and see how many durable jeans i can pick up for 10 bucks and set them aside.

tea, sugar, drugs- the fun ones as well as the medicinal ones.

went to the doctors to get a physical.

Nothing major you know. Plus i stock stuff i use alot because i know it will cost more in a month. so might as well, i'l save money this way.

anyone else planning ahead for this possibility?

You'd be better off cycling your way through it rather than just setting it aside.

Out of curiosity, do you live in the city or the country?

Your right the system could collapse, it is a pyramid system after all.  Imagine there was no power, no food or no fuel.  We would reduce to survival of the fittest.  People would start looting supplies, martial law would come into effect.

First thing is if you are in any inhabited area you will likely be fucked.  The army is the biggest and most well equipped survivalist group.  They will dominate and no doubt do the most killing.  Other smaller groups will emerge everywhere and will have the edge over you and your girlfriend.  Once commercial supplies are looted people will turn on each other.

The best bet would be to survive from rucksack and tent.  Get the hell out of populated areas ASAP.  You will need a solid understanding of how to get food from hunting and gathering.  Knowledge is essential here.  You will need pure water to drink.  You will need defence.

I often ask people what they would do in this situation most of them say, get their gun.  Yet everyone else is gonna have guns too so likely you will be shot and killed at some point.

The only thing I would want is a book on survival / gathering food from the wilderness.

I've got what I want:  Survival skills and a straight shot into the bush of Appalachia.

You'll probably be shot by the army.

A good survivalist won't be hiding in their basement with a load of cans.

I have a good helmet.

I think the largest concern is the sky falling.  From such a high altitude, even a small piece could cause a lot of damage.

i knew the discussion would de-evolve into into chest beating know it alls.

if it gets that bad, it's mostly luck.

all im talking about is temporary food shortages, high food prices, and a world with alot of desperate people.

not us living in caves. at that point its going to come down to who has the best immune system and physiology.

hunting and gathering? you think youd be the only person with that idea? the forest would be picked clean in weeks. and the lone wolf idea is foolish too, you'l just loos your life to a slightly stronger lone wolf. co-operation in farming and protection would be little better, and the lone wolf would sit at the sidelines, begging for table scraps from the co-op groups. even the first cavemen saw social groups as a necessity. side not, i am never sure if i spell necessity right.

Didn't you think to take your analysis one step further?

What happens when those co-op farmers group up to protect themselves against the lone wolf?  The lone wolf's team up, and overrun the co-op farmers.  But what happens then?  Clearly lone wolf's aren't good at farming...

Oh, they'll just keep the farmers working their fields by force, and then take a percentage of the food (probably a large percentage) to feed the lone wolf's for their "protection" from other roaming tribes.

Oh shit, you know what we just described?  THE BEGINNING OF CIVILIZATION.

Nah most people would be starving in the cities as the military dolled out international aid.

All the other great apes do it, so, since this is a discussion about survival, why not beat our chests?
