amount of time for incubation? am i doing alright?
    #989687 - 10/24/02 03:37 PM (14 years, 1 month ago)

Alright...i know there's info about this around. I'm just getting nervous, and i know to be patient and all. I'd just like some confirmation that i'm doing okay.
I innoculated (PF style) 12 jars a month ago. Mycelium growth began right on schedule and continued to proceed very well. About 2 weeks ago my jars reached 70% colonization, so i flipped them and they slowly continued to grow a little more. But over the last 2 weeks there has been very little progress. 3 of the jars have finally reached full colonization, but some of them are still only around 70%. Is this normal? I have my jars in an incubator at 80-82 degrees. I loosened the lids on 2 of the jars for a week to see if that would help speed things up (all of my jars have tight lids) and that didn't do anything. The jars that finally reached full colonization were not the ones with loosened lids.

I know i should just wait....but does all this sound normal? (i.e. over a month to colonize when they reached 70% colonization in less than 2 weeks).

Thanks a lot.
Manzarek

hey Manzarek sh!t happens....your scenario is about the same as mine ....i have like 5 more cakes that are at 85%.....if i were you i would just wait it out .....sounds normal to me...dont mess with the lids anymore...just let them take their natural course

Some times jars stall, but that seems a bit excessive. I mean you got two options, just wait it out or start over, since they're 70% done, I'd say wait it out.

I had this problem with 4 of my 12 1/2 pint jars. I let it ride and it took about 6 weeks for them to finish. Not sure why....

Those that took longer were just put into the fruiting chamber a few days ago. They all seem to be secreting a brown syrup like liquid from the bottom facing up) of the cake. It doesn't look like a contam, but who knows.....

Not to worry my friend. They are more than likely just stalled up, I am sure they will finish in time.

stalling happens, loosen the lids just a bit to try and get some air exchange and flip them for awhile(not at the same time if you are going to flip make sure lids are tight. That's what I do but sometimes the only thing you can do is wait, someone said something about brown syrup looking stuff that is normal if you are using BRF,

What I did when my jars stopped colonizing was just cut off the mycelium and put it in pasteurized compost (horse shit).

I've read in a few places that shaking the jars every few days helps to spread the growth quickly. Was wondering if this is accurate?

shaking the jars is if you are growing in large jars with grain or bird seed, dose not work if you are doing "cakes" for that to work you have to have space at the top of the jar.

I started 10 1/2 pint Jars on 10/11/02 and I have 9 jars at about 85-90% done and I never flipped mine or I didn't shake them either, but I was using GT Stain. My temp varied from 65 - 85 degrees and I never maintain the temp the same.. I wish you the best....

thanks for all the advice.
if this all works out, i'll be putting up a well documented grow log in the grow log forum (with plenty of pics).
