Porn in the USA: Conservatives are biggest consumers

Do as we say not as we do?

I love how even mormon Utah is loading up err.. downloading the pr0n!

Porn in the USA: Conservatives are biggest consumers

Americans may paint themselves in increasingly bright shades of red and blue, but new research finds one thing that varies little across the nation: the liking for online pornography.

A new nationwide study (pdf) of anonymised credit-card receipts from a major online adult entertainment provider finds little variation in consumption between states.

"When it comes to adult entertainment, it seems people are more the same than different," says Benjamin Edelman at Harvard Business School.

However, there are some trends to be seen in the data. Those states that do consume the most porn tend to be more conservative and religious than states with lower levels of consumption, the study finds.

"Some of the people who are most outraged turn out to be consumers of the very things they claimed to be outraged by," Edelman says.

Political divide

Edelman spends part of his time helping companies such as Microsoft and AOL detect advertising fraud. Another consulting client runs dozens of adult websites, though he says he is not at liberty to identify the firm.

That company did, however, provide Edelman with roughly two years of credit card data from 2006 to 2008 that included a purchase date and each customer's postal code.

After controlling for differences in broadband internet access between states – online porn tends to be a bandwidth hog – and adjusting for population, he found a relatively small difference between states with the most adult purchases and those with the fewest.

The biggest consumer, Utah, averaged 5.47 adult content subscriptions per 1000 home broadband users; Montana bought the least with 1.92 per 1000. "The differences here are not so stark," Edelman says.

Number 10 on the list was West Virginia at 2.94 subscriptions per 1000, while number 41, Michigan, averaged 2.32.

Eight of the top 10 pornography consuming states gave their electoral votes to John McCain in last year's presidential election – Florida and Hawaii were the exceptions. While six out of the lowest 10 favoured Barack Obama.

Old-fashioned values

Church-goers bought less online porn on Sundays – a 1% increase in a postal code's religious attendance was associated with a 0.1% drop in subscriptions that day. However, expenditures on other days of the week brought them in line with the rest of the country, Edelman finds.

Residents of 27 states that passed laws banning gay marriages boasted 11% more porn subscribers than states that don't explicitly restrict gay marriage.

To get a better handle on other associations between social attitudes and pornography consumption, Edelman melded his data with a previous study on public attitudes toward religion.

States where a majority of residents agreed with the statement "I have old-fashioned values about family and marriage," bought 3.6 more subscriptions per thousand people than states where a majority disagreed. A similar difference emerged for the statement "AIDS might be God's punishment for immoral sexual behaviour."

"One natural hypothesis is something like repression: if you're told you can't have this, then you want it more," Edelman says.

Three tenths of a percent?  This conservative could do that by himself in most states.

Yeah, the article overplayed the small statistical differences but it is still interesting how people are pretty much the same wherever you go in spite of their howling protests and feigned moral outrage.

Well you put your finger on my problem in taking politics seriously. It looks like it's not the cream of the crop that ends up trying to lead the rest of us. Liars and thieves and sociopaths and religious freaks and all followed over the cliff by scared sheep that will react to what ever fear invoking thing that the "leader" says is about to happen if we don't freak out now.

Of course I am exaggerating but IMO only slightly.

I really don't see how they reach the conclusion stated in the title at all.

They don't know the ideologies they just presume the makeup of the state is the same makeup of the subscribors.

Perhaps people in republican states aren't tech savy and so actually pay for porn rather than downloading it with torrents?  Perhaps the small difference is that?

Perhaps the porn company (which apparently was all they looked at, one company) produced shit appealing to people in rural states? Lots of topless tractor pulls and naked pig wrestling?

Or perhaps the laws on porn and zoning are more harsh in conservative areas and this means consumers go online for porn proportionally higher than others in more liberal who have local adult buisnesses within close proxmity.  This could certainly account for the difference and could mean the conservative areas consume porn much less but when they do are forced online due to the lack of local options.

THis article just seems like another abuse of statistics.  These stats actually serve to support the opposite contention under the second scenario.

Given they didn't even attempt to measure the porn consumed or the ideology, the whole thing seems silly (the way the article presents it).

Did they even try to determine the degree of correlation and to what extent the results could have been from pure chance alone?  Again, the article's description of the study shows an abuse of statistics it seems.  I'd be interested to see if the study was as worthless as described for the results in the title.

Maths isn't your strong point is it?

Edit: it's a terribly poor article, but to put it in perspective, look at this paragraph:
Quote:

5.47 per 1000 compared to 1.92 per 1000 is not a 0.35% difference, it's a 285% difference.

But yes, atrocious article.

Or maybe having no acceptable outlet for their sexual energy due to repressive societal norms makes conservatives angry (who wouldn't be) and they misdirect that natural flow of energy into unnatural means- killing brown people who presumably have more sexual potentcy and penis length.

It would explain a lot of history that's for sure.

The guy said there is 3.6 per thousand more.  That's 0.35%.  Of the population.  Is that better?  Jesus.  Don't be such a twit.  Isn't Montana a red state anyway?

well yeah, but that's kinda the point- the percentage difference irelative to the total population isn't really important- its the relative difference that is.

And this article and study (if accurately depicted) is crapola.

All this really tells us is that conservatives are too inept with computers/the internet to get their porn for free.

Dude, its science.  You can't question science.  The word "study" was used in this article and so was "research".  That means their was some fancy shit going on you or I are in no position to question.

Are you one of those people that thinks the earth was made yesterday and that science is bullshit?  Jeez

You should never question science.  Even when you don't understand it at all you must always claim to agree with teh popular scientific viewpoints.  This will mean you seem educated and correct.  It also makes it appear that you understand the issue and have made an intelligent choice rather than ascribed to a faith.

Fjorgynn:  Seriously?  How have you decided that coservatives don't know how to use torrents?  Just a leap of faith.  The whole study is nonsense.  The result would be the same if the third variable was ruralness and this was correlated an inability to use torrents or find free porn.

Another problem is how they compensate for internet access.  I mean do they have any data to back up their method at all?  i.e. did they just assume buying porn from these websites were linearly related to internet access?

I decided it based on demographics - conservatives are older as a group than liberals. Old fogies aren't competent enough to steal porn.

Anyways I'm confused by your post, you're either being too ironic or not ironic enough.

The portion directed to you was serious.  I wondered how you decided the ideological makeup of the study population.  Seems like you just accepted the article and did so again in your recent post.

What evidence do you have that conservatives are older?  All I ever here about is politicians giving old people money and drugs.

I don't see why the propensity to purchase porn on the internet would be positively correlated with age, moreover, so I'm kind of wondering how even make that connection even if you believe the study.  Seems the ruralness is a much more relevant factor if I had to guess- but I don't since the study as described in the article is poo poo.

lol you're making it seem like some kind of crime, I 'accepted' the article. For shame! I accepted the presumed 'ideological makeup' of the study because assuming they surveyed the conservatives in the blue states and the liberals in the red states is SILLY.

The fact is many conservatives are sexually repressed old people who need porn to salivate over. This has passed from the 'hurfy durf show me the evidence' stage to the basic fact stage. How many high red state porn consumption rates, high teen pregnancy rates, high divorce rates etc do you need to see before you realize conservatives are more sexually 'immoral' than the liberals they condemn?

Why wouldn't the relative propensity to purchase porn be correlated with age? Since when were 40, 50, 60 somethings as tech savvy as teenagers, 20 and 30 somethings?
