Help with making soundscapes...
    #9824726 -

Can someone please tell me what equipment one might need to make music like this guy http://www.zealotrymusic.dk/html/ssind.html ? I saw his thread in this forum, and i think the music is simply amazing...

Synthesizers, samplers, effects, so on and so forth.

If you would like to ease yourself into using things like this, I'd say start off with software. Predator is a fantastic virtual synth that puts out a pretty nice sound, and I highly recommend it. You could use fruity loops to start off with as a daw.

But get a software synthesizer and play around with its presets to see how things are set to make the sound. Then start making your own sounds, which is fun beyond this world! :tongue2:

Check out the M-Audio Keystation 61es. This was my first keyboard, I've had it for about 4 years now. It's a very reliable, simple, responsive semi-weighted midi-controller for a great price. Just plug it into your computer via usb and its automatically recognized.

Then go get some free VST's to start out. String Theory is a great one. Just google them and you'll find loads.. kvraudio.com is a great resource for reviews and downloads of free and purchasable VST's.

Then get a cheap (or free, but I can't recommend any, as I haven't tried them) Digital Audio Workstation (DAW). Cubase SE is decent intro Daw, for really cheap.

This is the cheapest, most informative route IMO. It will help you learn all the different types of synthesis and which one(s) you prefer most, before investing in a multi $k keyboard that is typically limited to one or two types.

Do some research, but that's my overall advice: midi-controller, free soft-synths, and a cheap DAW.

Are you on a pc or mac?

From my experience, the synths don't really matter, it's how you fuck with the sounds that do. Reverbs and delays are a must and I strongly suggest experimenting with accoustics as well.

You're in luck. PC's have so many more resources to choose from when recording, especially if you're looking to do it cheap (my recommendations wouldn't work with a mac)

Another reason I recommend a midi-controller is because if you are not an experienced keyboard player, you can record you're playing in real time, and then go back and edit it note-for-note in the "piano roll out editor" so that your playing is matched up perfectly with the tempo. Once you get into it, you can learn how to do automations, which allow you to morph the sound in real time, after you've already recorded. All of this would be difficult or impossible with a traditional keyboard.

Any questions?

I'll come back when I get some... I'll have to save up for a keyboard, which might take a while, cuz I just found out my room mate is bailing at the end of March, so I'm kinda screwed as for the living situations...
