help with ps3 selection

I don't really have that much time to play a lot of video games, but I'm willing to get the ps3 for a few reasons. One is that I'm just used to the ps3 controller and don't really like the xbox360 games/console/controllers. two is that it plays blu-rays. three is because it plays back to ps2 and ps1 games (which I'm now finding out it actually doesn't do either :nonono:). and four and most importantly is because supposedly I can hook up my external hard drive to the ps3 and play whatever movies I have downloaded.

My g/f has very little sense of how much it costs to rent 4 movies a week from blockbuster, so in a few months the system could pay for itself if it does what I think it does. So is there any way that I could get a ps3 that still plays back, and will play the movies on my hard drive. Am I going to need to upload vlc media player to the ps3 in order to play the movies or will it just play anything? thanks for any help you guys can offer.

p.s. My t.v. is old and wont accept anything besides a cable for cable t.v.

Yes, you will probably have to buy on ebay or somewhere that sells older models

The following are backwards compatible in different ways:

- 20gb or 60gb release models use ps2 hardware inside for 100% backwards compatibility
- 80gb bundles with either motor storm or metal gear solid 4 use software for backwards compatibility, and are about 97% compatible with ps2 games.

All others are not backwards compatible, any 40gb models, and all newer 80gb models.

It was a stupid move by sony IMO to make so many freaking models and all this confusion on them, but it is what it is.  Backwards compatibility has always set them apart, and now they are losing some of that.

Only way you could use vlc media player with it would be if you chose to install linux on it, which isn't easy if you don't know linux well.  It works great as its own media center, but does not play EVERY single format, but does play many of them.  Divx and xvid movies are fine, most .avi, .mpeg, .m2ts, .vob, depending on encodings, plays mp3 just fine.  You will have to set up a DLNA server (sometimes UPnP servers, if it supports the protocol, my freeNAS server does) to share across a network, or have a external harddrive formatted with fat filesystem to plug in through usb.

I had an 80gb motor storm model that got stolen, and whenever i replaced it got the metal gear solid 4 80bg bundle, so still have my backwards compatibility, but have not gotten to test it out since all my games were stolen as well...I also play lots of videos, mostly hi def content through my ps3.

So if I get one of the ps3 bundles that allows me to play back, I can't just plug my external harddrive in and begin playing movies? Not sure what a dlna server or fat filesystem is.

depends how your external hdd is formatted.  FAT is a certain way you can format your hdd.

But is it easy to format any harddrive to play on ps3. Or are there only certain harddrives that can be formatted that way?

lol, ps3 sucks for playing pirated movies.  it is not region free, so kiss your r5's/pals good bye.  on the other side the fence, u can flash a 360 and play burn games and it natively plays r5's.
