Teaming up Linux with Windows ; making an external harddrive ; hooking up 2 computers

The main question:
I'm seeking to phase out my Windows XP in favor of Linux. I already am dabbling a bit with the LiveCD versions of Knoppix and Ubuntu, but I get the impression that 2 OS installed = k3y. How does this work exactly?
-Create a partition -Install Linux thereon -Upon startup select the OS you want to use
Is it as simple as that? Then there is the matter of me using a RAID 1 system. (2 x 160 GB high rpm HDD in an automated backup system ) will this interfere with creating a partition and installing/using linux?
---
The side questions: I'm thinking of creating an external HDD because I find external drive prices just plain ridiculous. Is it as simple as to shove an internal 7200 rpm into a casing, connecting it to an IDE/ATA-to-USB cable and plugging it in?
---
How do I hook up two computers?
---
I'm a first class n00b where it comes to these things, I hope someone will take the effort of enlightening me ^_^

here's how to set up a dual-boot using ubuntu (should be roughly the same with other distos): https://wiki.ubuntu.com/WindowsDualBootHowTo?highlight=%28boot%29%7C%28dual%29

no idea. maybe someone else can help you out on that.

yes. this is what I have - an internal harddrive popped into a casing connected by usb. works like a champ.

to share internet connection, you need a router (or a third computer to serve as a router). to actually "connect" and share files between two computers, I believe you need to set up a server. someone else can explain that more accurrately than myself.
