Nope, never been to New York... Never want to either, big cities wear on my nerves.

And I did meet some of those guys- the sketchy Moroccan (or whatever) dudes in trench coats... walking next to you saying "heroin, pcp, acid..."

in this drug documentary called "American Drug War: The Last White Hope"  This one cop said Amsterdam is so fucked up you have to walk over people laying on the sidewalk cause they are so strung out on drugs.

Yeah I'm not a big fan of NYC either, OK to visit but not to live. Too many fucking people. Certain parts of Amsterdam are actually really beautiful and quiet but that area near the Centraal Station and Damrak are nuts.

Its very nice; Ive been 3 times so far. Its expensive as hell if you're renting an apartment or home (up to about $1000 a week) but if your staying in a hostel it will be fairly cheap(closer to 30 a day).

Get ready for the most densely crowded city you've ever seen(barring some kind of hong kong effect). Once you arrive in Shippoll station you have to take a train into the main city which depending on time of day is also packed lol.

The portions of food are muuuch smaller than you would be use to in north America;so it may take a meal and a snack to get you where your going.

Drug wise; I can tell you the weed is pretty much the same high quality every where you go (youle almost actually get bored of seeing nothing but cared for buds)but when you get home don't be irrate at your dealer for not being as crazy with the manicuring as they are in "the dam".

I was fortunate enough to try the mushrooms before they became illegal and had an eigth of mexicanas and I can say without ego involved that they were the most potent I have ever had by far.

Honestly though the scenery/sounds/smells even (a pleasant one) of Amsterdam will all stay with you for many many years if you let them; its a wonderful place o visit. To me second only to my current home .

It's pretty much like any other city except you can smoke weed.

Also it is rainy and gray all the time.

I disagree, Canals, Windmills, Van Gough, Rembrant, Tolerance, crazy architecture indoors. Amsterdam is very unique sir.

So you gotta make $60,000 a year just to live there?

I'm glad to hear that; on my last time out as I was grabbing them from the fridge in the store a pigeon walked in and flew up on the counter and strolled around with no one really caring or shewing it away (I damn near lost my mind). Hopefully 4th coming in another year or so.

I should have rephrased that; a 2 bedroom apartment in the Jordann area. (artsy fartsy neighborhood few roaming gangs of drunk tourists and traffic)

Ya I meant to edit the original and double posted and editing now...

:ilold: What? Maybe the pigeon wanted some service.

Anyway, yeah I went to my local smart shop and I asked if they had any shrooms and he produced a box of sclerotia. This is nearly 3 months after the ban.

lol I figured he was just the health inspector. That's good news; unfortunately the dutch have trouble understanding the fine nuances between a Canadian and American accent so I might not get treated with the same discreet service.

I wouldn't worry about that Ir. Money is the only language you need to worry about speaking.

In fact, I've found the Dutch (contrary to many stereotypes) to be slightly conservative and restrained overall.

That's been my impression too. It's weird because I tend to despise things conservative (not speaking of conservative economy theory, mind you), but I actually tend to be very reserved in terms of my personality. One thing that I can't stand about the stigma attached to drugs is how it basically means you associate with some very shady people. So I like conservative people in that sense. I'd just like to be able to get high with people and talk about astronomy/cosmology, what it means about us as a whole, the direction of the planet, etc... Unfortunately, that drug stigma tends to make that a hard thing to do. Of course, I have nothing wrong with also just getting high and laughing my ass off, too.

So any recommendations on areas outside of Amsterdam? I'm sure if I went to the Netherlands, I'd want to have easy access to Amsterdam to see the Van Gogh museum & the Rijksmuseum, as well as the Anne Frank House.

I live close to NYC, so I've been there countless times. It's a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there... if you know what I mean.

The very nature of experience is ineffable; it transcends cognitive thought and intellectualized analysis. To be without experience is to be without an emotional knowledge of what the experience translates into. The desire for the understanding of what life is made of is the motivation that drives us all. Without it, in fear of the experiences what life can hold is among the greatest contradictions; to live in fear of death while not being alive.

Lol, my girlfriend and I used to call them the "cocainestasy" dudes and would sometimes be like "we only want cocainestasy" and they'd be like "oh yeah, I can totally get you that!"

I lived there for several years and Amsterdam itself is pretty awesome--biking around and chilling in the park and going to the botanical gardens, shopping at the veggie market, boating in the canals etc. I didn't really get along with most Dutch people, it seems like they've all been friends since they were babies and don't really want to meet anyone new. Also seemed that they were judgmental against Amnericans. This was at the height of the Bush years, but it's not like I supported Bush or something. :justdontknow:

I mostly chilled with Italians, Aussies and Brits.

Outside of Amsterdam is definitely cool to visit and compared to America everything is really close. I liked Leiden, Utrecht, Arnhem and Haarlem. The Hague was kind of boring, imo, and Rotterdam is awesome but not as cute or quaint.

I never really understood our American obsession with Amsterdam. What do no other towns have coffee shops? I don't even mind the feel of NYC, but Amsterdam just seems like a tourist trap as some of you have described it. Netherlands seems like it has so much culture to offer (although pretty much any country seems that way living in America), so why not see the country while you blaze? I just don't see the point in hanging out in coffee shops for an entire vacation. If I want to be inside I can smoke all the weed I want right here in my apartment.

On a separate note, why did they outlaw mushrooms after all this time?
