So what's Amsterdam really like?

It seems like an idealized fantasy, but I have to wonder how much of that is simply because the Netherlands tend to have much more open & progressive social policies. After hearing about some pushes towards a more conservative approach on the drugs & sex legality, I have to wonder what it's really like.

So those who live there, or who have been there recently, what's it actually like? Just like any other city, but with some limited open drug use? Or is it a heathen's paradise? Or... most likely.... something inbetween?

I'm not just talking about the drugs, mind you... what are the people like? Oh, and the drugs. Don't forget the drugs.

Yeah, I know. It's weird things like that which make me wonder what it's really like there. Of course, it's almost as if it was technically legal, at least as a customer. Obviously, the whole back door illegally of the shops buying their supply of weed is bizarre. Kind of hard to understand how something can be considering illegal, but totally ignored.

That about sums it up. Writing as a lifelong resident, among the people I know, occasional weed use is seen as a harmless vice and is usually done indoors. On the street it's mostly tourists, the homeless and teens smoking. Real stoners are looked down upon as sad people wasting their life, which most of them are IME.

And don't forget the rain and the cold. There is lots of that. But if you can stand half of the streets being worked on all the time, not being able to use a car (parking for non-residents is up to €5,- per hour, and most of the streets are too jammed up for cars anyway.) and filthy sidewalks then it's ok I guess. Personally I find the city less and less fun to be in as each year passes, but that may just be me. The words "unwelcoming tourist trap" spring to mind when I compare it to small towns in the rest of the country, but there are some nice spots if you know where to look.

that's basically what amsterdam has been like in my experience, especially now that i've been there a couple of times and have been able to see a lot more of the city...

That's disappointing, although not unexpected.

Yeah, I think if I ever were to go, I'd avoid the whole, "whoa dude, like stoner420man" thing. I see no point in reinforcing a stereotype.

Plus, if I were to go, I'd really want to take in all it had to offer. It seems like there's a lot to see & do in that general area, as with any major city... and why miss out on it just to get stoned (and I will say "why not do both at the same time?', provided we're not talking about reinforcing stereotypes again)?

Would you say the surrounding area is more appealing to visit?

I know if I were to go to the Netherlands, I'd want to make it a long trip where I could also spend time in neighboring countries as well. If I'm gonna go to Europe, might as well make it worthwhile.

Mind you, I have no plans or anything. I'd just really love to go. I think getting to see what life is like for people outside of the United States is something I want to experience.

Well the sidewalks were PACKED with people, the roads are super tiny, every street is a one way street, and there's no place to park unless you want to pay $30 an hour.

i think amsterdam is a beautiful city, in spite of the massive drug tourism that goes through it... the red light district is indeed pretty dirty, but as soon as you move away from it a different picture is seen... plus, you do have a lot of culture... there is the anne frank museum, a lot of historical buildings, nice architecture, etc... after all you have to keep in mind that it is a really old city...
another thing is that the further away from amsterdam you get, the lower the prices are going to be, especially the weed prices...
i would certainly recommend checking out the surrounding areas... the netherlands is a pretty small country, and you can get anywhere pretty fast... in fact western europe is (in comparison to the states) a fairly tiny continent... the railway network is fully developed, allowing you to move easily and quickly from country to country... you can see a lot of europe in only a couple of weeks...

I was there at the beginning of this month, unfortunately we booked a hotel in the red light district without knowing. I didn't like it very much to be honest, we were constantly getting shady guys coming up to us asking if we wanted to buy coke and the like, just made it hard to relax really I'm sure its a nice city but i didn't get to see much of it as we left after a weekend.

Den Haag on the other hand is where we spent most of our time, now that was a cool place.

I'm living in a small city just outside of Amsterdam and I go there regularly. It's really a beautiful, charming city in which there is much to like.

The open and progressive policies are in my opinion indicative of the Dutch as a people. They view soft drugs and prostitution not necessarily as something to eagerly embrace but they take more of a pragmatic view of it: you're going to do it anyway so why fight it? The Dutch realise that these things aren't going away any time soon and just permit these things to happen unpenalised. The result is amazing: since I've been living here I've noticed that not many Dutch people (in my city at least) get high every day, it's mostly internationals that partake in the weed smoking and all of the craziness. The Dutch tend to stick to alcohol and get their fair share of drinking in :awesome:. In fact, I've found the Dutch (contrary to many stereotypes) to be slightly conservative and restrained overall. 

There's absolutely zero stigma attached to soft drugs and prostitution here like there is in the US. People tend to have much more mature attitudes toward it and there is a refreshing lack of Puritan weirdness about sex and drugs.

Twirling- the city of Amsterdam, in particular, the Red Light District can be quite overwhelming when you first go there. Prostitutes all over the place in the window beckoning you to have a romp, weed smell everywhere, sex shops at every turn but this is mostly for the benefit of tourists. Other cities in the Netherlands such as Den Haag have the same relaxed social policies as Amsterdam and yet  you don't see nearly the same amount of unbridled debauchery. The weed, hookers, and shrooms are cheaper in these cities by the way (hint hint).

Re: the Dutch people. I love them. They have a great sense of humour with almost impeccable deadpan delivery and cut straight to the chase. In spite of all of the noise coming from the US about the Dutch being liberal heathens, I've honestly found them to be far more libertarian and likely to mind their own business than other cultures I've lived among.

That's what the USA should be doing too.  Ron Paul has been arguing that we should be this way his entire career in Congress.  Hopefully he runs for president again in 2012

When I went there, it was cold, rainy, and there were piles of shit everywhere (don't know if they were dog or bum shit).

The city was crowded.  People drove backwards in the streets... the streets were a madhouse compared to the places I've been in the US.

On the upside... the prostitutes were beautiful, and the drugs were awesome.  The people were so friendly, random people would start talking with you on the street.
