Wireless Electricity

I found this article which is pretty interesting
http://www.fastcompany.com/magazine/132/brilliant.html
By judging what Tesla managed to do in the field of electronics I find it hard to doubt anything he said.

No more old-fashioned extension cords. I got them at CompUSA. :yesnod:

How many watts can that do?

It's been around for decades.  In the 70's and 80's I worked in a GM car plant.  We had a lot of cushman electric scooters that we drove around to answer trouble calls, and dozens of electric forklifts.  Each had a parking place with half of a transformer in the concrete floor below, and the other half on the vehicle.  When ever we'd park in a charging zone, it would charge the batteries without connecting any cables.

When I worked at microsoft in the 90's through 2007, we experimented with this for racks in a data center. It worked OK for certain applications, but fucked up hard drives because of the magnetic disks, and it erased information from tape drives.  We ended up taking them out because electromagnetic sensitive equipment had to be shielded.  Those of us working there also had reservations about our own nutsacks too.  It's well known that people living under high voltage power lines have higher rates of cancer, supposedly due to electromagnetic fields.

Kidding aside (that pic I posted ^^^ up there is fake) real inductive chargers have been around for a long time. They work by putting half of a power transformer in one part of the device and the other half in the other part of the device. The alternating magnetic field between the two transmits power across empty space.

I've had one of these rechargeable electric toothbrushes for years. The base is one half of the transformer and the bottom of the handle is the other. No wires or electric contacts. You just set it in the base and it charges:

There is absolutely nothing difficult about transmitting power over any distance you want.  The problem is doing it with anything close to a semblance of efficiency.  When I was a kid we used to pick up AM radio stations from Poland.  That means someone in Poland was actually transmitting minute amounts of power to my house in Missouri.  But the received amount was only a very, very tiny fraction of the sent power, and then there are the losses in the equipment used to convert the electrical power into EM power.

Lasers, light bulbs, microwave ovens, radar stations, and even you emit wireless energy all the time.  It just so happens that wires are much more efficient ways of directing energy where it needs to go than most other stuff we've so far come up with.

I like to imagine that in the future power lines will become obsolete and there will be hundreds of relay towers in every city which recieve electricity wirelessly from power plants and distribute this power to distribution towers which are located every few city blocks. These distribution towers can then distribute electricity wirelessly to all the buildings in their immediate vicinity.

Then again its probably more likely that we'll come up with something completely revolutionary nothing like anything we've seen so far in the future. I like the idea of harvesting deep space gamma rays with satellites then the satellites transmitting this galactic energy to the earth in the form of microwaves. Imagine mass scale masers attached to satellites transmitting huge amounts of electromagnetic energy to a gigantic antenna tower on the earth. The idea fascinates me. I just plain like the idea of invisible power beams being beamed from outter space to the earth.

The problem with this is that if you can transmit power, any yoyo can receive it for free.  How does the power company make money?

Good point. The power companies wouldn't go for that. Electricity production should be a tax free public service in my opinion but I doubt the people investing in building these power generators share my philosophy. I think its very likely that in the future we'll find really efficient ways to generate current so the average yoyo can produce his own at home.
