Wireless network advice needed.
    #3952506 -

I have 4 computers, 3 desktops and one laptop.
Currently I have cable Internet, and it is connected to my router.
The router divides it up between the 3 desktops.
But if I want to use my laptop downstairs sometimes, so I have to disconnect my cable between my router and cable modem every time and that just isn't good enough.  :smirk:

I want a wireless solution for this, can anyone recommend me a cheap good solution for this problem?

I've seen wireless USB network devices, please help me a bit.
(I've worked for various computer company's having to build and repair computers, so I do know about computers and software).

i use netgear ma111 usb adapters for laptops and they're easy to switch over to a friends computer if they need internet at my place and for what you want to use it for. i use netgear wg311 pci cards for my desktops and a wgr614 router. it wouldn't be 'cheap' to setup your house though. if you did all you computers probaly over $200, just the laptop probably around $80. if you use wireless b rather than g it will be a lot cheaper but defentaly not good if you want to setup wlan. if you just use it for internet it's okay unlesss you have over 11mbps connection

Most wireless routers have ethernet cable ports. As for how many I'm not sure. But you could run your laptop wireless, and have your three PC's wired. Or you could by a PCI wireless card for your PC's and not worry about cables at all.

Any models/types/links/examples ?

It looks like I might buy a wireless router + 3 wireless PCI cards for the desktops. And if possible a USB wireless connection device for the Laptop.

the usb adapters aren't very good I hear. Get a card that is compatible with AirSnort , that way you can have a little fun if you feel so inclined.

my post mentions 3 model numbers that i use. the usb adapters i have are good, not as good as the pci cards but not much worse. the only diffrence i've noticed is i can pick up more networks with my pci card from my apartment, the usb ones will work down to my pool no problem (about 20 meters) i've never had reason to take it further so don't know what the actual maximum range is. i wouldn't limit yourself to cards compatible with airsnort like posted above, it would be illegal to access someones connection though those means and is a completely pointless risk seeing as there are so many open networks to use and programs like netstumbler and things like cantennas for wardriving. right now at my apartment i can legally access about 6 networks. starbucks and all that usually have open AP's as well. so no need doing illegal shit for no reason. i'm pretty sure in europe it's illegal to use anyone else AP, even if it's open though, i would check local laws before doing anything like that. it seems like something pretty stupid to get in trouble (or fined) for unless you're doing some sketchy shit and need to protect your idenity.

John, does the WGR614 also have connections for UTP cables?
Or is it only WIFI? A combo device would do the trick for me. Since I really only need a wireless connection for my laptop.
