Crazy roommate
    #9769743 -

Alright...

This doesn't seem to quite fit in this forum, but I'm really torn up over this, so I think it does qualify as a threat to my mental health. I have a room mate, who I only got to know well a few months before I moved in with, after which time I found out what kind of person he really is.

I'm not really sure what to do about this because he is so volatile, I'm never sure if he will tweak out when I approach him about random stuff around the place, let alone telling him he needs to see a psychiatrist...so basically he is an asshole. He can be a very cool fun person and a good friend, but he will randomly, if in his eyes you do something *slightly* against him, he basically mounts an offensive slaughter against you.

The thing that's really bothering me is that I feel trapped. I can't talk to him about these things...I can't just slip under the radar because he *will* find a way to engage in verbal combat. I can't just blast back at him because I'm pretty sure he would fight me (some friend, eh?) which would be dangerous because he's really strong, has studied fighting arts, been in prison & a ton of fights, etc. so he would probably kill me. I've  thought about this and I would be ok with us getting into it and him killing me so that he would go to prison for life. Sounds messed up, but whatever, I need an outside perspective on this.

I dunno it's basically about the confrontation thing. He doesn't take criticism well - actually reverse. He will bring up faults on your side if you point out something he's doing wrong. He's hypocritical in that he will demand certain things to be done around the place but do very similar or the same things himself and usually in a more extreme way.

I will give an example that happened just tonight, which prompted me to write this and it will give you a real example. I was doing HW while listening to music when his gf came over. I heard them talking aggressively, which I assumed was an fight, but I couldn't quite figure it out with my music on and mind on HW (didn't care anyway - just doing the natural assessment of my surroundings). He knocks on my door and says "fazdazzle you awake?" I don't answer thinking i'll use my music as a guise if he asks later, since I don't want to be in an argument right before bed nor do I want to get in an argument with he and his gf.

I walk out to brush my teeth and he says "hey fazdazzle, remember in metaphysics (we took a metaphysics class together) we talked about the mind/body problem and how if you took all your information in your head and put it in another body, would you be you?" I said yes, to which he disagreed and felt he needed to defend himself. I didn't expect it to get far so I calmly defended myself...after a while I realized I *really* wanted to go to bed and I didn't want anything to do with this. He stated his point again and I shrugged & said "I disagree and I'm going to bed." As I started brushing my teeth I heard him say to his gf "Strong argument." I walked out and calmly said "I didn't want to get into an argument right now, if you had asked for my opinion and said Ok that would have been fine, but that's not where it went." Brushed my teeth.

I'm pretty dang sure he thinks I'm backing out because I can't defend myself and would have no matter at what point I would have ended it..but I really didn't want to argue for 30 minutes about the mind/body problem a. with him and b. right before I go to bed.

We have this place until May, when I will finally be able to part ways with him. All my other friends think he's a volatile, anger driven crazy ass and can't believe I'm living with him. I've lived with around a dozen different people and he is leagues below everyone else in terms of livability. Just to top all this off - at one point we got into an argument and he mocked me like a little kid, yaknow in the whiny distorted voice and said shut up...like "Blah blah blah Shut Up." He really stressed that, like I was some piece of shit that wasn't worthy of speaking. He apologized later but that is beyond unacceptable. I told him "I don't know what you consider a friendship to be, but that isn't it."

AHHHH!!!! lol....I'm really sorry this is so long....but I feel like I need accurate advise. Thank you so much for whoever reads this....I really mean it.

Sounds like he knows how to push your buttons.

ohmatic is right, May will be here soon and this situation will resolve itself.  In the mean time, learn what lessons you can here.  The most important one is probably to never ever share living space with a button-pusher.  :crankey:

You might find some help by googling "How to deal with obnoxious/rude/angry people."  There are mental skills you can develop to lessen the impact of other people's behavior on you.

Blog posts like this can sometimes be helpful:

http://www.lifehack.org/articles/communication/7-ways-to-deal-with-annoying-people-and-still-get-things-done.html

In fact, typing "How to (insert whatever you want to know how to do)" into google can generate a lot of tools and solutions for a lot of problems.

Don't get sucked into petty games, let him have the last word and have the impression that you can't put forward a strong argument, who gives a shit.

That sounds like a good solution.  After all, seeing how he sounds like a miserable fuck, who gives a shit if he wins a petty argument?  Let him win.  Let him bask in his pride.

This is great advice

Let others be 'right', as a habit.

Thank you thank you thank you for reading!

Yeah, May will be here soon...it's just that it's really getting down to the wire. I've been coping for a long time now, so I'm looking for ways to at least diffuse the situation until I can leave him forever.

I'm not sure if "letting him win" would work all that well. I am not ashamed really at all to admit if I'm wrong, but I won't let someone blatantly lie to me. I could see him getting more mad/disgusted by giving in as a sign of weakness (he called our neighbors "weaklings" the other day - not to their face:thumbdown:). Also if I were to walk away it would take control away from him, which he despises, and he would probably says something like "fine walk away, dick."

Thanks for the link WhiskeyClone. I seem to have stumbled upon many of those while trying to deal with this kid, which as you mentioned has taught me lessons in communicating with people. It's like having climbed K2 and the rest are just knolls on the lawn. I have benefited from this, for sure, since I can now articulate myself accurately and calmly now in just about any situation.

I try to find common ground all the time, but it doesn't ever seem to satisfy him. His being right would mean that I would live a miserable life - him granting me few rights, so I can't go down that road out of self-respect. At one point a few months ago I had a couple beers with my brother, when we started talking. He confronted me about cleaning...the discussion got pretty heated so I said "can we talk about this at another time? I've had a few drinks and this conversation is getting pretty intense" he kept on talking. I asked him two more times. Eventually I took a hint from "Fight Club" and said "This conversation is over," and walked away...he was like "OHH IS IT?" lol like "it's on bitch!"

So yaknow, that's where I feel trapped. I'll probably just have to wait it out...trying to give him the benefit of the doubt as much as possible. I'll do some searching and see how much I can learn from this weirdo.

I guess no one's going to be able to give me specific advice, so thank a ton for letting me vent out a bit  I didn't originally think I would add in so many stories.

I think the absolute best thing I can do is remain calm - no matter what. I'm going to try and work on that intensely. Like you said, WhiskeyClone, there are ways that I can minimize the impact other people have on me, which is really great advice.

Thanks again you guys

i had a crazy room-mate, but not in the sense this guy is, he was actually crazy.

one night i can home, all the lights were off and the flat was in total darkness- i went into the kitchen to get a drink, turned on the light and he was sat on the floor in the corner room eating a can of tuna. it scared the sh*t out of me. A few days after that he had a complete breakdown and through all of his stuff (including his clothes) down the rubbish shoot. The only thing he kept, was what i can only describe as a Halloween costume (green velvet pants and a black cape) which he wore for about for about a month before someone informed his parents and he was sent to an institution. looking back i feel very sorry for him- he was very intelligent.

your room-mate just seems like an arsehole. if i was you i would secretly put an ad out for someone else to rent your place- and try finding somewhere else to live yourself.  if you end up fighting you'll both be kicked out and lose whatever deposit you've put down; or he'll beat you to death- either way its not good
