GE is being forced by the government to spend millions of dollars to clean the PCB's out of the Hudson river. Yet another reason they are a bad investment.

@2AM in the morning?  I would have made that call over the weekend when GE's CEO was tasked to be an advisor for Obama.

That news came out on Friday the 6th.

well i have 200 shares of ge
100 @12
and 100 @12.05

im glad i did not dump them last week during the big dip.

amazing, they are attributing some of the rise in price to a positive reaction to the news of the dividend cut......

i still hold some e-bay that i picked up a while back, the day before they reported earnings.

i was amazed to see my net value actually go up for once today, and i would imagine that with the confidence from obamas speech last night, that the markets will go higher again tomorrow (tuesday)

You felt confident after the speech...?  I felt the opposite.  I just heard him campaign and when your campaigning you'll say whatever is necessary to win.

Tell me something I don't know.

Everything is dropping, market breadth is over 90% negative and volume is heavy.  This is institutional distribution, and is why I have been building my cash position with several sales over the last week (currently over 30%).  This is precisely the "sell the news" reaction I suspected would happen as noted in my Friday Update, where I shorted Goldman Sachs (GS) and Morgan Stanley (MS) and have since covered those positions.  Our uptrend from the November lows on the S&P remains intact, but it is very possible that we will break through to the downside, which is exactly why I am keeping my positions small and building cash.

Oil did break through $40 today which is not a good sign for the sector - indicating that it is likely to retest the $33 level.  However, I do not mind my holdings in Marathon oil (MRO) and BP Plc (BP) for the reasons previously stated in my STOCKS thread.  I am still up on both positions, by 5% and 25% respectively.  I should also note that BP is my second smallest position, right behind my smallest stake in JPMorgan (JPM).  I have intentionally left this position small in order to allow room to buy more BP should it fall below $40.

GE was down to 9.27 last I looked. It dipped below 9 briefly today. It's about time to buy some. I may buy today or maybe put in an auto bid to see if I can get it lower.

I was really tempted when it dipped below 11 but as I said, it still had some fluff in it's price. I'm thinking it's just about gotten rid of the fluff. GE is not going to go under and one day it will be worth a lot of money. I have an auto bid at 8.50 in for 1000 shares. I was wondering if I should have put it in for 2000 but it may never go to 8.50 or it may dip lower.

If GE will just cut their damn dividend already, their stock would be in better shape.
They'd save billions of dollars a year, and hopefully preserve their AAA credit rating.

I'd bet that GE can rally right after news of a dividend cut, 'cause all the institutions already expect it.
But until that happens (especially if their credit rating is downgraded)... upside will be limited.

I could see a quick drop if they cut dividends that may be a good opportunity to get in at.

Probably would be if you could get it!  I'm not so sure you'd see a drop on that news though.  At this point, it seems like the threat of a credit downgrade (which is increased as long as GE is spending billions on their dividend), is a bigger problem for the stock than the actual dividend cut.

From what I've been seeing and hearing, it looks like most large investors already believe GE's dividend is toast.  They're just waiting for the formal announcement to see by how much it will in fact be cut so that they can factor the new number into their models, along with the reduced risk of a credit downgrade (which would be absolutely devastating for the stock if it were to occur).  Once GE's credit rating is more secure, institutions will feel more comfortable committing larger amounts of capital and the stock should find some footing.

Never use a tired cliche, you might get flamed.

But really, who can anticipate a bottom in this environment? - at the risk of losing a momentous upswing? Care too?

Flame on you flaming flamer - Pink Flamer

But really, I can anticipate a short term bottom in the S&P of 687.  There I stuck my neck out and actually predicted not only where the market will go but where it will not go from there.  I can anticipate a short term trade to the upside resulting from that very short term bottom of S&P 687 (or maybe 678 but I can anticipate that missing the last 9 points on the way to the short term bottom won't be such a bad thing as I will be on the sidelines anticipating my next move).  I can anticipate closing that short term upside move from that bottom (or close to that bottom I would anticipate) resulting in short term profit.  I can anticipate going short after that short term rise from that short term bottom and profiting from that short term move down to test that short term bottom.

Oh yes I care to.  Es too, brute?
