Is there a way to regain my anonymity from whois.net?
    #9762425 -

When you register a domain name, whois.net publishes your name and address with it. Anyone know if there's a way to keep my site address but get my info off there?

Incorporate and put the corps name on their or form any other legal entity and do the same.

Or pay to have someone receive your notices for you, which is sometimes quite cheap.  They'll act as an agent and forward correspondence to you.  Most hosting plans allow you to do this- probably most registration services as well.

You could also just lie or use a pseudonym.  If you do this you MAY have lost some ground if your ever sued for cyber squatting but that's all I know of as consequences.  You may want to investigate if your state has common law name change.

In some, like mind, you can use a thousand names so long as none are for fraudulent or illegal purposes and you just start using them to affect the name change.

Well, someone told me even if I pay my hosting service some extra money to legally "own" the domain name my info will still stick with whois.net. So I wasn't sure if it would be updated if I changed it - if that is possible. I might just have to try.

Oh I see, I didn't answer your question, I should have said I was just telling you how to change your registration  or contact to something that isn't you.  And you don't pay someone to own your domain really, just to be the agent or contact person or to route such requests.  Just like how a company has a secretary to handle inquiries, you pay a company to handle yours.  Or you could just invent a name to do buisness under or something depending upon your state's rules on that- some you have to register an agent just like corps do and pay a fee- so check first.  Do you know if your contact is supposed to be a natural person?  Or can you put your contact as an entity like a corp or assumed name for business?

So are you saying that that website doesn't give you only the current registrant's information but rather also the prior information?  Like you can see the history of who's been the contact or owner?  Sounds pretty weird, is this like an extra service you pay for?

I mean you put your information out there its always available anyways, I just wasn't aware folks actually retained such records.  Do you know this or are you just going off a source?  If so could we see the source?  Just curious how you know this (or think it if you don't know it).

I registered one through Yahoo! a while back, and they gave me the option of paying extra to protect my personal information. It still has my real first and last name, but not my telephone # or address.

I'm really just going off of one other comment I got on a message board - where I asked them if my blog was anonymous. Then they showed me whois.net and told me my contact info would stay on whois.net even if I payed my hosting service to keep my information anonymous.

It looks like whois.net only has current contact info, but I may just not be finding the sites that changed their point of contact.

I will look into registering a business name and setting up a P.O. Box also.

This is a pain in the ass.

Thanks for your help.

Ok based off that I wouldn't worry about it.  I would imagine they are referring to services that still display you as the owner but don't display the contact information directly and have to be mailed a subpoena or something for that.  Does that make sense or was that not what they were syaing?

Services like this may be the easiest- most registration and hosting services seem to have these options too for pretty cheap:  http://www.godaddy.com/gdshop/dbp/landing.asp

Here's how it would look, both name and other info would be off:  http://www.domainsbyproxy.com/popup/whoisexample.aspx?se=%2B&app_hdr=0&ci=5165

I find it hard to believe that guy is right that some whois publically displays a history of the registrants.  I mean its the web, someone has the info, I just find it hard to believe they'd archive all that and make it freely available.

But I'm sure someone here could confirm or not.  Either way, wouldn't the above type service be better than nothing?  I mean if the whois archives anyways there's nothing you can do about it?  These services will be cheaper than the other solutions too...

I changed my whois info to a fake name and address and an anonymous email, it worked so far and was easy and free. My hosting service still has my real name and address (they also do the domain registration), but it's not easy to find any more.

Yeah I tried changing my address with my hosting service and it automatically changed on whois.net, so it doesn't seem very accessible if it is archived on there somewhere, somehow.

Annom, I didn't realize you could change info directly on Whois.net.

Or maybe I'll do it legitimately through that GoDaddy service, because that is perfect.

Thanks again.

I use godaddy and none of my info is in the whois record.

They wanted a couple extra dollars to do that but it was not expensive at all.
