When will the gulf stream breakdown?
    #9749386 -

Does anyone have a rough estimate as to when this will happen? I just realized I'm gonna need to move if this happens as it will be like -40 in England and house prices will plummet and our economy and infrastructure will be completely fucked.

Think i might need to move soon!

Anybody who claims to have a rough estimate of this is lying or ignorant.  The system is too complex for our current models to make a prediction of that sort.

How likely is this to happen eventually?

in our lifetime? about 70-80% ... if we don't drastically change the way we use and produce energy fast it certainly is going to get pretty ugly for europe...

Much evidence in the world that it has happened before and will happen again.  just the natural life cycle of the earth.  And if it does in your life time you could just take the land bridge over to America and head south.  Can't be that far of a walk can it?  he he

Preparing for the gulf stream to shut down is like preparing for the end of the world in 2012.

you shouldn't.  and if you do - yer dumb.

I'm a PhD candidate in Meteorology, true story. Last estimates I heard were around May of 2010.

You guys don't really believe that crap do you? The earths climate and atmosphere are within normal parameters.

Global warming = fear mongering

There are plenty of other PhD students on the Shroomery. We do get some free time. Not often, but it happens.

I'm sorry but you're both wrong. The earth is undeniably warming right now, the only debate is whether it's anthropogenic, and whether the changes it brings will kill us all.

That's really the point I was trying to make
Global warming today is nothing more than fear mongering

We knew the earth was in a warming trend way back in the '40s and '50s

The theory that we are causing global warming is a recent trend that I disagree with

but you can agree that regardless of whether the warming trend is anthropogenic or not we shouldn't be dumping our poisonous waste into the atmosphere, yes?

When the Pacific and Atlanic Ocean are reunited!

Funny story. The gulf stream, whilst being nice and keeping Englands warmer, used to go over the Sahara. When south and north American joined up the gulf stream went over the united kingdom and Scandinavia. This resulted in much more ice forming there, which triggered the last major ice age.

it's actually the LACK of a major ocean current shuffling heat from the equator poleward that causes major polar ice formation.
the mid-atlantic current and the gulf-stream are both VERY responsible for the temperate climate in the northern hemisphere
