I don't understand it but I'm interested in it.
But if we really want to get picky we can say we don't understand anything because no matter how simple something appears on the surface there's always greater degrees of complexity underneath. Whether it be abstract or not. I don't believe it's impossible to have a firm handle on quantum physics, or as much as is known about it at this point. But there are admittedly some points that are obscure, and that's not the fault of the person trying to understand as it is the fault of the inability for quantum mechanics to explain everything. Bring on the Unifying Theories!

Honestly, I'm a Geophysics student, I'm prett smart. But when these guys start talking about Cosmology and Universal Origins, my mind is completely blown. Most of the stuff that they can say is true, having tested it, is stuff that I lose after 5 minutes of conversation.
I can talk about structural geology and the origins of the Earth intelligently, but these guys are on a whole 'nother level, with particles and shit I've never heard of.
I'm going to have to disagree, MIT has an excellent Physics department, probably a hell of a lot better than Wisconsin, not to say that you don't have a great one, but that's a little arrogant and ignorant.

No one fully understands it. Some understand more than others but what they know may be wrong. Is matter made of solid objects or of energy? Just the answer to that question will set off a long debate which has not yet been settled.

MIT's physics department is irrelevant. Wisconsin DOES have one of the best physics programs in the nation.

I never said MIT was not a better school than Wisconsin.
I did say we have one of the best programs in the country, which is unequivocally true; you can ask anyone.
I'm not sure what part of what I said you consider ignorant or arrogant, because I don't think it is either.

They don't make the top ten list for physics programs that have produced research papers that have been cited by other research papers (from other schools). MIT comes in at #9 on that list.

So only the top ten are among the 'best in the nation'? I wouldn't say that's the case. There are probably ~150 Physics PhD programs in the nation - they are probably in the top 10-15% of that. From what I recall they are in the top ten for plasma/fusion research, and their other sub-fields are also not to shabby.

That is the criteria that I set, so yes.
I'm not saying that they are bad, but when I hear somebody talk about a top physics department in the US, Wisconsin is not one that comes to mind. (They are much better than the physics department at the university that I attended; I'm not trying to slam them, just being real.)

Heh... for physics, my school didn't even make the top 100.

It all depends on your definition of "understanding" and "good school/university". I can't say I understand quantum mechanics, but I do know I understand it better than my mother. My university is decent in international rankings, while I think it uses very stupid and old fashioned learning methods. I don't consider it a good university, but I do think the students that graduate are ok. If you make it through all the stuff they want you to do while they can't communicate or learn you anything, you have to be good
