Go to a college bookstore and get the Chem I book. If they don't have one, they will usually order a teachers edition for you which typically has extra notes and answers to problems in it. You won't get the hands on lab experience this way, but you will at least be learning the basics.

Yes, a college basic college level chemistry book dealing with quantitative analysis would be a great place to start. And a good calculator and easy to read Periodic table chart would also come in very handy!
Good luck with your studies!

> read Periodic table chart

I have yet to see a modern chemistry book that didn't have the periodic table in the front or back cover.  The don't really need a calculator until you get into pH calculations or rate of reactions... and then it is more math skill that you need.

True, true, but when I was taking Chemistry, I found a periodic table tacked to the wall invaluable..it saved time to glance up at it instead of flipping the book to the front, but to each his/her own I suppose.
And, of course, I was speaking from my experiences in college chemistry re the calculator. Its rather hard to work with Avagardo's number on paper!
It seems our professor literally "wrote the book" (He co-authered our textbook) and demanded nothing but the best from us! *whew* I'm glad thats over..oh yes, and I got a B.
On a side note, I don't think I shall ever forget that Oxygen's molar weight is 15.99 gms/mol.

This is true. I used to leave my physics book open and use the chart in the back of it while working out of the chem book.

> Its rather hard to work with Avagardo's number on paper!

*laugh* This is true. I went to a college that forced us to work everything out without calculators. We would carry those big nasty constants around rather than work them out (on the tests).

Which area of chemistry?
I'd be guessing you'd be looking at organic synthesis....

I have a HS level chem book. Maybe I'll write a thread with one chapter in it every couple of days? I'd do that only if people would read it though.

I gotta warn you though, it builds up pretty slowly, starts from pretty stupid shit, but it does get more complicated so worry not, I'll post it up later.

Enroll in a course at your local community college, then you will get credit for reading the book.

Holy shit! No chem!?!? Every college needs chemistry....

If you haven't got credit yet for a Chem course you could always just take the AP test after learning everything.... I never even took Gen Chem.

If you already know the basics, though, and are looking for an actual course that you're going to PAY for, you might want to take Organic chem, instead. Gen chem is a joke.

> Gen chem is a joke

I cannot imagine trying to learn organic without having the basics of general chemistry down solid.  Granted, I see no reason why a bright person cannot learn general chem on their own, but I would still recommend taking the lab section regardless.  The safety and basic lab techniques taught in general chem lab are essential.

The other nice thing about taking general chem is that you hear and learn how to pronounce all those strange chemical names.  Do they have books on tape for general chem?  Probably.

I would even guess that general chemistry is probably a prerequisite for organic chemistry. It was when I took it.

Certainly you need to be able to do all the basic calculations they teach you in that class.
