Anybody here enjoy Scotch whisky?

I've very recently taken a keen fondness to single malts.  Whenever I used to drink whisky it was always the cheaper stuff and it was one of those things for after you were too drunk to really care.  But then I tried Isle of Jura (just the 10 year) one night, and it really changed my perception.  It was the first whisky I ever had that I REALLY enjoyed thoroughly, I think because it is quite inoffensive and nicely peppery.  Since then I have been on a bit of a one man mission to get through as many as possible. :lol:

The most impressive I have tried so far is Laphroaig, it's SO fucking nice.  I worked my way through a few of my Dad's mid-range whisky's this last weekend, but didn't find anything that really stood out.

I love my new-found luxury, haha.  It's crazy how different they all taste and how subtle the flavours are.  How do they engineer the taste?  I'm a total whisky noob so sometimes I think it's all wasted on me but I guess you have to start somewhere.

Anyone else enjoy a dram?  What's yer favourite? :cheers:

Never tried Scotch whiskey, but Jack Daniels is my favorite alcoholic drink by far.  :cool:

Heh, it's been a while since I tried Jack straight.  It's pricey over here, I usually just drink it with Coke which I know I shouldn't.

Trying to get through the malts right now :smile:  I'm just about to crack open a bottle of Aberlour 10 years.  yay

scotch and bourbon are two very different things.  Jack Daniels is a bourbon.  I like bourbon.  Scotch I don't do.  I have a couple buddies that are into it, but for me, cheap scotch tastes like shit, fine scotch tastes like shit, it's all wasted on me. 

I love me my bourbon though.  :paperbag:

I like Makers Mark but my favorite is Bourbon Woodford Reserve.

All bourbons are whiskey, but not all whiskeys are bourbon...Whisky is an alcoholic distillate from a fermented mash of grain produced at less than 190 proof in such a manner that the distillate possesses the taste, aroma, and characteristics generally attributed to whiskey, stored in oak containers (except that corn whisky need not be so stored), and bottled at not less than 80 proof, and also includes mixtures of such distillates for which no specific standards of identity are prescribed.

For a whiskey to qualify as bourbon, the law--by international agreement--stipulates that it must be made in the USA. It must be made from at least 51% and no more than 79% Indian corn, and aged for at least two years. (Most bourbon is aged for four years or more.) The barrels for aging can be made of any kind of new oak, charred on the inside. Nowadays all distillers use American White Oak, because it is porous enough to help the bourbon age well, but not so porous that it will allow barrels to leak. It must be distilled at no more than 160 proof (80% alcohol by volume). Nothing can be added at bottling to enhance flavor or sweetness or alter color. The other grains used to make bourbon, though not stipulated by law, are malted barley and either rye or wheat. Some Kentucky bourbon makers claim that the same limestone spring water that makes thoroughbred horses' bones strong gives bourbon whiskey its distinctive flavor. Kind of like that "it's the water" thing with Olympia beer.

Bourbon can be made anywhere in the U.S., but all but a couple of brands are made in Kentucky. Only the state of Kentucky can produce bourbon with its name on the label. The name comes from Bourbon county in the central bluegrass region of Kentucky. This county was named in 1785 to honor the French royal family and was once the major transshipment site for shipping distilled spirits down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers to New Orleans. Barrels shipped from there were stamped with the county's name, which then became the name of this kind of whiskey. Interestingly, there are no distillers in Bourbon county, Kentucky right now.

I don't know anything about bourbon really and I've not had one in a while.  They're totally different drinks though, not really the same at all

a bottle of bourbon whiskey put me in a state where even the
smell would make me puke, my brother kept forcing me to drink a
shot of what ever he bought, of course here in the US we dont
have the diversity that you guys have most common drinkable
single malts seem to be Glenlivit and Glenfiddich, I've also
gained a great appreciation Black Bush, the irish whiskey

I havent found Glen Moray, Laphroaig or Mortlach locally, all of
I'd like to try

One of my favourites is laphroaig, a very smoky/peaty Islay single malt.

It is also much cheaper than another Islay I like. Lagavulin as it is 10 year instead of 16.

EDIT: Damn, just reread the OP and realized you know Laphroaig. :rotfl: That is what I get for half reading things.

It you liked Laphroaig, try the Lagavulin, it is just that extra little bit more special.

I started drinking whisky thanks to laphroaig and for some reason many people, even single malt lovers, don't like it. But I think if you try it and like it, you will be a single malt fan the rest of your life. It was a real eye opener for me as I had only tasted, and hated, things like J&B until then.

Haha, I used to be like that with Tequila after one bad night.  I think everyone has a drink they have left alone for years because of one hangover from hell :lol:

I tried The Glenlivet when I was in Stockholm last week, the smell is really good compared to others I have tried, kind of like honey and bananas! I couldn't put my finger on the taste, nothing jumped out except that it was really full and hot.  Unfortunately the ridiculous prices on alcohol in Sweden meant I couldn't investigate further.

I seriously recommend Laphroaig though, especially if you like smokey/peaty.
