Dropping out of school
    #9739728 -

Let me start off by saying that I am 18.

For me, school has been one of the most depressing places I've ever had to go to in my life since I was very young. I get along fine with others in school, I'm what a lot would consider semi-popular, I don't do sports or a lot of extra-curricular activities, but I do get along with all the cliches and am generally well-accepted.

I am currently a junior, because when I was younger I went through a homeschooling program and completed a lot of my required classes, but my current high school requires 29 credits as a senior to graduate. I feel that I am wasting so much of my life right now being depressed in this prison.

I do however realize how important an education is to succeed (easier) in this country (US) and pull out ahead of everyone else. There is a program near here which offers a "diploma completion program" which allows you to go through some schooling online at your own pace and get an actual diploma, not a GED. I meet all of the requirements and the only fee is a $20 enrollment fee.

I do realize that I might be in for a tough up-hill road for a bit in the future, having all of this time on my hands and balancing responsibility might be a little hard.

I am young, but 110% willing to listen to whatever advice the wonderful people here at the shroomery have to offer. Negative, positive, neutral, life related, I'm all ears, so please give any advice that you think I should have.

I wouldn't do the thing online. Its a pain in the ass. Honestly, if you really hate high school. Drop out and get your GED. You can still get into college. I got my GED when i was 17 because high school was never my thing after realizing all the stuff you were fed in specific areas and the authoritative programming being dished out. I realized i'm better at teaching myself. Anyways, in total it took me 12 hours to sign up for taking GED classes, going to two GED classes for practice tests(required), and going to take my GED test. It's very easy. I don't regret it at all. Its something to check into if you just want to skip into college. Though college is very different than high school. You might seem to be a little less bored and more challenged with college courses. Its up to you. Don't let the common stipulation that idiots only get their GED. At first it was embarrassing because of how it is portrayed, but realized it was better for myself.

Its up to you. Good luck.

Just deal with it and finish up.  You don't have much time left in school anyways.  When you get a little older and look back and realize how little time you actually spent in school you will see that you made it out to be  worse than it really is.  You should spend your remaining time on trying to make friends with as many girls as possible.  Even the ugly ones!  You would be amazed at how hot the ugly ones are a few years out of high school and how ugly the hot ones become.  High school is a very a short time in your life make the best of it.

Funny, yes.... but true.

I'm going to agree with post #3, that you should just stick it out and finish highschool.  It's not like its hard - the classes are a fucking joke.  It truly is a rediculously insignificant period of your life.  Sure, you generate most of your social skills in that period of time - but you've already gotten through most of that stage.

Just finish it up, and be done with it.  I haven't talked to more than 3 people from my highschool since graduation - fuck HS.

While the GED may be easy, you may find that not being physically IN SCHOOL will lead you to do less, become worthless, etc. etc.  I only say this because a buddy of mine went that path:  got his GED, sat around and got high since he didn't have to be in class.  I'm pretty sure he's still doing the same thing now.

Whatever path you choose, pursue it with MOTIVATION for greater things. (although I do recommend you stay in school)

i ended up dropping out and getting my ged no practice tests required i just took the test which is easy as hell.... from there you can go to like ivy tech or a community college get i think maybe 8 credits and you can transfer into pretty much any college if your grades are good...

community college is a lot better then highschool you can choose to go once a week for 4 hrs or twice for 2 each for one class... shit take your time if you dont wanna go a lot...

it comes out to be the same in the end if you can get good grades at a community college its just like skipping highschool and getting on with the real shit that will go towards an actual degree

and also community college is no harder than highschool you may have to write more but the work is no harder...

I also dropped out of high school. I was 16 at the time. School + me does not mix well. Didn't used to anyway - it may be different these days as that was a long time ago. I never used to show up to class. When I did show up to school, it would already be lunch time by the time I would even get there! Most days I just didn't go at all. I was maybe there 40% of the time, if that.

They have the same kind of programs here where you can finish your diploma.
I went to some of the night classes, and did others online at home to get the rest of my needed credits.

I respect your stance and can totally relate.

When I was your age (I'm 22 now), I hated school with a fucking passion. Who in the world wants to spend 6+ hours of their day listening to some shit head talk?..and most of the time the douche doesn't even know what he/she is talking about. Teachers, particularly ones who teach in public high schools are indifferent to the needs of the students. From my experiences, I figure it's just a paycheque to them. They could care less about inspiring or guiding the kids (excluding the few that do).
That is why I chose to drop out.

You come off as an intelligent person, and I am sure you do realize the value of education. Unless you plan to make a living with your hands, education is crucial. The bottome line is; employers pay for skill. If you don't know how to do fuck all, then you will be making fuck all.

After dropping out of the public school system, I attended an alternative high school, where teachers did care, did inspire, did guide. I ended up graduating with honours, and went to college..but I dropped that too.

Either way, what I'm getting at is: EDUCATION IS IMPORTANT. Get your high school diploma or GED...you will thank yourself later.

Peace,
Tien.

This is why I recommend you do it. If you realize this, then you realize why you can't spend another year and a half wasting away in high school when you are already eighteen.

I agree with whoever said "just deal with it and finish up."

Don't run from it and try to sneak in the back door.  Just put in your time like everyone else.  I didn't like high school either.  It might be no fun, but it isn't prison and it isn't a waste of time.

What about it do you find so depressing?

Hey everyone, thanks for taking the time to reply and give your input. I'll reply to each post tomorrow, but right now I'm going to sleep.

Just wanted to update and say that I talked to my counselor today who I highly respect and after about 20 minutes of looking at everything and talking about what I want to do in the future we decided that it would be in my best interest to finish this year and go to the completion program next year if I still thought I wanted to, mainly because the completion program requires that my class (senior, while I'm a junior) has to be out for a year before I can skip the electives, and since I'm already over halfway through the last semester I'll lose all of my current earned credits if I do decide to leave now.

Guess it just comes down to waiting it out.

G'nite everyone

You sound like me. I was pretty much the same socially. Friends with everyone and well accepted, but not necessarily the popular guy. I finished High School and went to a year of college before getting into some legal trouble.

I have been away from school for a year and a half now. There's nothing I want more than to go back, because I don't want to be stuck knowing that I can do great things, but not having the Credentials that society and corporations have come to expect.

My advice to you is to finish out high school normally. Then take some time off from school, be it a semester or a whole year. Being away from the schooling environment lets you get away from the "I'm being forced to go to these classes and I don't want to be here" mindset. It really makes me feel good to want to go back to school.

I wish the world didn't depend on certificates of merit and diplomas and doctorates to determine your potential value. But unfortunately that's how the majority of the world works.

Didn't read all of the replies, but my advice would be to stick it out.  I hated high school and missed countless days of it.  I actually graduated a semester late.

As others have said though, college is completely different.  As much as I hated high school, I enjoy and appreciate going to college.  It is really the complete opposite.  Instead of them imposing control on you, you are given all of the responsibility.  They also focus more on you proving that you learned the material rather than simply beating it into your skull through homework.

Dont drop out - it will be easier/more rewarding to do it now, than later.

I dropped out + finished through a "loser school," a drop in continuing education center primarily for fuck ups.

You'll be done soon enough + surely your family will appreciate the effort you put in to finish.

Once you have your diploma, take your time and get life experience...

But seriously, its easier now than later + it will be better than getting it online, or getting a GED.

Do your best, be realistic, and focus on the future.

Seriously man, just dont drop out - it doesnt sound like you have that bad (not being teased, or beat up or anything.)

Take a year out and get a really shit job then go back the next year. Does wonders for your motivation. That's what i did anyway.
