Las Vegas
    #9735124 -

Well I booked a flight to Vegas in late August and I have some questions.  I've never been out of my tristate area, let alone on an airplane, so what do I do?   I feel like once I get to the airport I'm going to be completely lost.  I have a stop over in Cincanatti...  How does that work?  Pick up my luggage, get in line to have it re-checked, then board?

I'm looking at hotels now and it's looking like the Luxor is where I'll be staying.  Rooms are runnin $80 a night!  Anyone ever been there?  Reviews?  I'm only going to be there for 2 nights then I'm meeting up with some people for a desert campout outside of the city but while I'm on the strip, what are the best places to go?  What are some tips to save me money?  I need to know these things!   I'm obviously googling the hell out of it but they're all too discreet.

Help this Newbie rock Vegas.

Don't take bottled water, no lighters, bring a carry on backpack to keep stuff you might want to bring on the plane like food, beverages (once you get past security point you can purchase bottled whatever), book, etc.

Show up at least 2 hours early. Try not to have too much junk in your pockets, don't wear jewelery be prepared to take of your shoes and belt off. Try to only bring one luggage to check in and a backpack to carry on.

Check in to get your boarding pass the night before your flight, if the airline allows you to so; that way you don't have to stand in line to check in, you go straight to security check.Find your gate and sit in that general area and wait till they start boarding your letter, which if you check in early will be A so you will be the first group to be let in (might not be this way with all airlines).

When you say stop do you mean a transfer to another plane or just a layover? If the latter then you just wait in the plane and the attendant should announce to remain seated if your final destination is Las Vegas.

If you are transferring into another plane, then depending on how much time you have, ask your airline rep where your gate is in that particular airport, get there and sit at the gate so you don't miss it. Your bags should arrive at Las Vegas and they will announce which luggage rotation to pick yours up at.

give yourself plenty of time and ask any airport employee where to go.  They're super helpful, and there are a LOT dumber people in this world than you - so they've dealt with things way worse than anythign you could ask from them.

I'm from Vegas.

Usually your checked bags will be checked through your connection to the final destination - so most likely you won't have to recheck your bags, and if you do, the person at the check in counter will tell you so (this has only happened to me on international connections).

Places to go depends on what you are looking for.  The Mandalay Bay hotel is next door to the Luxor.  Pretty cool interior and lots of night clubs and fancy dinners and stuff.

Wanna drink cheap?  There is a small casino called Casino Royal http://maps.google.com/maps?q=las%20vegas%20strip%20casino%20royal&oe=utf-8&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a&hl=en&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl(less than a mile north and on the other side of the street as the Luxor). They should have dollar beers.  Just buy like 3 of em and walk around the strip.  It is cheap and entertaining.

If you want to gamble, stay away from the large casinos unless you have lots of money.  Most of the smaller ones will have lower minimum tables.

I have no interest in gambling whatsoever.  I've never been big on casino games either, even when played around my dinner table with some friends.  I'm on a budget too.  I have plenty of time to save, but I'm interested in the food, drink, and atmosphere of the place.  That's funny you say Mandalay too, I was going to stay there but they're not going as cheap as the Lux.

Thanks for the tips too, they're exactly what I hoped to learn from this thread.

Excalibur, on the other side of you from the Mandalay Bay, has a pretty good buffet.  It isn't gourmet food by a long shot, but it's all you can eat!

Atmosphere - Mandalay Bay is your place (as far as what's close), but it can get expensive - especially the clubs, but that is any club anywhere.

Be prepared to spend a lot on drinks if you aren't gambling, unless you go to that Casino Royal place I mentioned.

Been here long?  I grew up here.  Living out in the Northwest in a rented house right now.  Gonna try to buy another house this year back up where my old one was (West Trop/215 area). I've moved away a few times but I always end up back here.  Vegas always feels like home.

I went to vegas when i was 16, drank way too much tho.  Me and a buddy of mine ended up "hey mistering" someone for booze.  I was with my mother at the time, i passed out in the bathroom cold and maintenance had to come unlock the door to find me with vomit everywhere in the bathroom.

DUDE im jealous of you. I was in vegas 4 years ago on vacation and loved it.  The luxor is crazy.  My brother liked vegas so much he moved out there for a year and ended up moving back eventually.  If you can book a show go see a Cirque Du Solei (sp?) show its AMAZING.  I saw siegfriend and roy befor he got mauled- it sucked though big time.  I stayed in the Riviera but last i heard thats gone.  Caesar's is sick, Paris was awesome, MGM has lions walking behind glass in their lobby! I loved Vegas man.  The pink flamingo GAHHHHH what i'd do to be there again!

When my family visited some friends down in Las Vegas, they took us to see  MGM, Ceasar's Palace, the Rivieara, Rio, and a couple others (forget the names).  They were awesome!  Everybody should see vegas at least once..

this spring i'm going to atlantic city with a friend for his 21st, so that'll be cool too.
