Backcountry fishing.
    #9727694 -

I admit I'm a fishing addict and have been since a little kid. However I don't really enjoy fishing the way most do. First I seek solitude. I don't enjoy being around a bunch of yahoos who just want to kill the most fish and have bragging rights. I guess fishing is more of a quest for myself as corny as that may sound. Sometimes the idea of back country is the only thing that makes since to me anymore.

I really enjoy having to bushwack into a place that has wild fish and it doesn't hurt if they grow to great size. I fish only ultralight gear so I can pack it in and stay for weeks if I choose. I really love to hike and fish my way up or down some canyon stream or small river, feeding myself on fish as I go.

Anyone else enjoy this kind of fun?  I'd like to hear about it in detail if you want. It's off season to some extent here now so I'm in the dreaming and planning stage.

yeah me and a fellow shroomerite used to tear up this one canyon stream, i nailed a 2lb brown trout one day, and we caught tons of medium sized trout, definitely enough to feed ourselfs on if we wanted to stay down there a few days.

a friend has been planning a hike for a while now, and our journey should include some lightweight telescoping backpacking poles, and wild streams and creeks to fish up while out in the woods.

hopefully we do it before spring is done, so we can live off wild mushrooms, wild plants, wild trout, and dehydrated vegetables.

THATS the benefit to going way out in the cuts.
nice pink meat, similar to salmon.

I love to explore, fish, trap and hunt in all of my free time!  Most the time I go by myself because I know there isn't anyone else to disappoint or because usually others don't want to go hardcore exploring/bushwacking.  I deffinitly like going to a nice river and walking up and down it finding the good holes and fishing spots.  River fishing is great, thousands of salmon and dolly varden in every stream in the salmon season.  I really like going to lakes and rivers and fishing trout though!  I break out the fly rod now and again as well for the trout.  I hate the thought of combat fishing, and I usually take off when there are a handful of other people trying to fish the same area.

No trout pics right now...but perhaps this will do?

That's a nice trout cptn!

I've always been drawn to water and wondering what kind of fish or life might be in it. Been fishin since I was a lil tot and I can't get enough of it. I've never even considered checking out the rivers and streams around here, been too spoiled by the boat. Now you've planted a seed in my head and for that I think thee.

Nice! Here's a 24 inch brown I took on my ultralight. This glutton had ten crayfish and a mostly digested chipmunk in his gut. Click to enlarge.

I have found that tiny jigs are killer on large trout.

I like your style dude. Not many of us left who really like the minimilist style of fishing. I go most often alone for the same reasons you do. In fact it's almost impossible to find a fishing and hiking bud that either has the time or the inclination to fish like this. I guess this is what a good dog is for.

It sounds like you live in a fishing paradise. I'm envious. I'm fucking envious of not being able to fish every great place there is to fish.

Hiking and exploring up and down an isolated stretch of river is one of the greatest pleasures this world has to offer IMO. I will fish on a lake for sure and enjoy it but it does not compare (for me) to the excitement of the promise of a new and complicated section of fishing challenge around each new bend. Half the fun is reading the water and seeing something new constantly. Not to mention running into the occasional bear or bobcat. I highly suggest you give it a try. Then post a pic.

I'll do that

That fish had a chipmunk in it's belly? What does it want to be a bass or something?

They are serious meat eating predators. They don't necessarily need it to be completely fresh however.  Fishing a dead minnow on bottom will catch a brown when all other trout will ignore it. I suspect that brown was crusing the banks and that poor little critter just happend to fall in or was already drowned. About all that was left of it was the tail and from that I could identify it as a ground squirrel.

Many people say browns are hard to catch but I find them easy to fool with something tasty and substantial. Light line is a plus however.

yeah i was using an ultralight setup, with 6lb test, and a Kastmaster, when i hooked up on that biggun.

ultralight + big trout + secluded area = k3y

Damn, didn't know that about brown trout. I'm stoked to go out now! I've never caught a brown, had my share of rainbows and cutthroat though. My pops has tons of fishing gear, I'll have to ask him to set me up with some light tackle.

Do you fly fish?

I use two or four pound test. I tend to hook more fish but lose a few more lures to snags if I can't wade out to them.

I like two pound on a very flexible rod. You can cast very tiny lures and give them good action, including streamers and wet flies with a tiny sinker. My largest rainbow on two pound was twenty seven inches and six and a quarter pounds. It took my a while to land it and my hands were shaking when I finally got it in. I have made very short spin rods out of fly rod blanks. I still prefer fiberglass believe it or not.

i cant stand 2lb.

i always hook up on the biggest fish in the place and lose my favorite lure.

6lb is like the minimum for me.

and i fly fish, but i havent in a long time, my cat barfed in my old reel and i didnt discover it til long after it had rusted
lame...

i prefer a regular spincaster with a spoon or spinner when fishing anyways.

I used to ice fish in Michigan with 1/3 lb. sewing thread. I used it on a spring bobber  http://www.thornebros.com/winter/rods/thorne/spring_bobber_threader.html ; and used to catch big bluegills when nobody could even detect a bite. That was a blast.

Don't be so fussy. A good fisherman can do wonders with an inexpensive reel. I have caught lots of big fish on inexpensive equipment. Of course some folk are more into their equipment than actually fishing.

im not fussy, i just like my reel to not fall apart while im using it for the first time.
any "good fisherman" would agree with me.

by cheap im talking the 20-40$ ones u might get at say k-mart sporting goods.

im sure u can mail order some better brands for a lesser price, but u cant match quality and price compared to a decent ultralight spincaster.

Well I've never had a cheap one break on me but I just used it for trout and smallmouth. Of course I wouldn't trust one on steelhead or salmon. (I guess I'm not a "good fisherman") I just catch a shitload of nice fish. (mostly by accident I guess)

I don't use fly gear anymore. I just spin with ultralight using spinners, flies and jigs.
