Fishing for food?

I know this can sometimes be very variable depending on location, but who has some tips and tricks for getting them aquatic critters onto the campfire? often times when i go hiking i am gone longer than i can supply my own food so i need to get my own...i always try to fish in streams/rivers (not always a lake around) but i have ROTTEN luck! i usually rely on plant foods and crayfish for much of the journey and various other animals i am willing to eat (depends on how hungry one is i guess).
so what do you all do? i have weight limits so nets and shit are out. but i have a collapsible rod and some basic tackle and line etc.
i am especially interested in stream fishing (not huge rivers....maybe up to 6 meters across and maybe 1-2 meters deep type stream) i am mostly in fairly wet mountain areas that have somewhat fast moving steams but not big. people in the PNW know what i mean.
looking forward to responses.

Bring a hook and some line, light line, get something that floats if you want to fish the surfice. Since you have a rod and tackle you know more about the flys in that area than I ever could.
(A sinking line if you want to fish another way, rocks can be used for sinkers if you know how to tie a proper knot but I can't explain all the differences in knots on a message board.)
Flip over some rocks and stumps and find some bugs, toss a few in and see if anything will hit the bugs you are finding, if yes then use the same bug they are hitting and attatch it to your hook, there's a special method for doing this so the insect actually stays on you have to find an area you can hook through and the bait will stay alive, again I don't know what you'll use so trial and error will work fine if you are out there with lots of time.
If you know anything about river currents you should be able to find an area you drop the line and and it will float around to an area that fish are hanging out in.

polarized sunglasses take the glare off the surface so you can actually view into the water depending on clarity.

high alpine lakes r the best, wait till sundown and fish with a fly rod or a light spinning rod, try various bait combo,s, they sell small jars of bait which work well and keep for a long time fishing in streams look for places where the water settles into a pocket that is where fish hang out and wait for food to come down, dont let the fish see u, careful when cleaning the fish try not to get too much fish smell on u as the bears go crazy over that smell

hehe i am pretty careful with bears and cougars....i am not fond of them visiting my camp!
i have good luck in lakes....but often i wont see a lake at all or maybe a few days apart...but streams are much more common...i guess i could always follow a larger river up, but there is no telling how far a lake would be, if there is one
thanks for the sunglasses explanation, thats a good one.

yer welcome.
This works in lakes also... If you want to bring a few hooks and catch several sizes of fish, you can start small and catch some bugs, then you use those to catch a small bait fish.
Then you step up, if you catch my drift?
