LSA - hydrodistillation?

Ok - my chemistry knowledge is comparable to a ants philosophical meditation, but, I was just asking myself, if using hydrodistillation for extracting LSA would work/be usefull... anyone?

The high temperatures of hydrodistillation would be likely to cause decomposition of the chemical compound you are interested in. I'm not convinced this method would extract the LSA, while leaving behind the chemicals that cause negative effects in Morning Glory seeds; it might in fact magnify the effects of both, or destroy both leaving you only with aromatics.

While concern over using solvents is understandable, if proper precautions are taken, the following technique is reliable for obtaining a slightly cleaner 'extract' than the traditional quick and dirty method: http://www.erowid.org/plants/morning_glory/morning_glory_extraction1.shtml

It is best to familiarize yourself with basic chem-lab-methodology before attempting any extraction though: http://leda.lycaeum.org/Documents/Kitchen_Chemistry.13378.shtml [obtain and read his references if possible as well for a better understanding].

Supercritical C02 extraction sounds like it might work as well, but does not make sense financially unless you are planning on large-scale professional manufacture of essential oils. If you could afford this, it would be better to purchase equipment necessary for chromatography.

I'd say, stick with the solvents.
