Slumdog child actors underpaid, still live in slums


Rubina Ali (Latika) and Azharuddin Ismail (Samil) were paid £500 and £1,700, respectively, for a year's work according to the children's parents.

The child actors’ parents have accused the hit film’s producers of exploiting and underpaying the eight-year-olds, disclosing that both face uncertain futures in one of Mumbai’s most squalid slums.

Slumdog Millionaire has won four Golden Globes and is nominated for 10 Oscars. It is on its way to making hundreds of millions of pounds in box office receipts.

The film’s British director, Danny Boyle, has spoken of how he set up trust funds for Rubina and Azharuddin and paid for their education. But it has emerged that the children, who played Latika and Salim in the early scenes of the film, were paid less than many Indian domestic servants.

No, you should just go see it or download it. I give it my highest recommendation...I'm a slut for the director's work though, Darren Aronofsky. Pi, Requiem for a Dream, and the Fountain are all favorite films of mine, and now I'd add The Wrestler to that. He's got the touch.

i watched pi again ~3 weeks ago, for the first time in about 5 years...blew my away.  the first time i watched it i didn't get any of it.  requiem's good.  didn't care for the fountain

maybe i'll give the wrestler a shot

The Fountain was nominated for Worst Picture at the Razzies the year it came out. It's easily one of my top ten all time favorite films. :lol: What that means...I don't know.

Ive been meaning to see both of those films. HUGE Aronofsky fan, thought Pi wasn't totally easy to get through.. The Fountain blew my mind

I must say OneMoreRobot I only watched Slumdog Millionaire because of you and god damn I gotta say thankya.


Great movie. Great music and great child actors.

Reminds me of a little like the Kite Runner, but I enjoyed Slumdog Millionaire more.

Slumdog Millionaire was amazing.

Although I heard so many good things about The Wrestler I had to watch it. It's a good movie to be sure.. but goddamn it wasn't what I was expecting. People made it out to be this amazing story, but for me it was just tragic, depressing and sad :sad: That kinda ruined it for me.

I didn't like Slumdog Millionaire as much as I thought I would.  The love story was kinda cheesy to me.  Maybe I just wasn't in the mood for a feel good movie.  Also some of the script seemed kind of amateurish to me, which was distracting. 

I watched Frost/Nixon that same week and got much more enjoyment out of it.  Probably my favorite movie of 2007.  Just got done watching Doubt, which I really enjoyed as well.  I downloaded The Wrestler but have yet to watch it but am looking forward to it.  Lots of good movies come out at around new year/awards time!

Slumdog Millionaire was just way to predictable/cheesy for me. The Wrestler on the other hand was my favorite movie of the year.

I liked everything about the movie except for the bollywood dancing..But I like The Curious Case of Benjamin Buttons a hell of a lot more.

It's true how slum kids get treated. Get treated like shit. I've seen them get abused in Bangladesh, until a big brother or stranger kicks that person's fucking ass.

Who was your favorite character? Mine was Salim. I always like the evil characters. they play cool rules. I like how he died in the money hahah

Salim was my fav. character too, except what he did with Latika was fucked up.

I liked the little kid who played Jamal more than the one who played Salim.
And the one that played Latika was a cutie pie.


My favorite part of the movie was watching the two of them escape and earn money their own ways :tongue:

I thought it was meh. I've seen a lot worse movies.


Wrestler I thought was pretty good.  I think it shows he's a very capable director that can maintain a distict style even when you take away the outlandish plots.
