Caramel Capped Wood-Lovers. In a monotub??
    #9693639 -

Do you guys think it can be done? Just put the monotub in the fridge and let it do its work?

Obviously lighting and FAE needs to be implemented. Temp control is the simple part in this case.

Thanks!

i don't know anything about growing woodlovers but the first problems that come to mind are lighting, FAE and cleanliness. Lighting could be fixed with an LED setup. Dunno how you could do FAE except for manually fanning. and keep in mind that the fridge is a notoriously dirty place. you might have a higher chance of contam

Temp control is the least of your worries.  They don't fruit from sterile substrates, so keeping a non-sterilized substrate contaminant free long enough is the real challenge.  Grow them outdoors. They'll fruit in the fall if conditions in your area are right.

if you do decide to give it a shot you should check out sporeworks. They have the "Friscosas" strain. It is a new and unnamed species that has been found throughout california and is very adaptive. It grows well from the bay area all the way to tahoe, don't ask how I know this. It devours any type of wood in its way. It is as strong as ps cyanescens if you are concerned about those things.

I have a couple friscosa prints myself, I'm hoping they'll do well in my area (N.E. U.S.), since I haven't seen anyone attempt it yet.  I'd like to eventually get them to be established on their own in the wild if possible, but I'm not so sure how likely that is.

OP:  If you use woodchips, which I assume you would if you're doing woodlovers, you won't have to worry too much about contaminations, since not very many types of mold grow well on wood.  If contaminations do arise, you'll be able to pick the contaminated woodchips out without too much of a problem.  It should work, give it a shot and see.  You can colonize the tub at regular room temperature, I believe, and then put it in the fridge for fruiting.  Here's some helpful threads if you haven't seen them yet:

To be honest I think a monotub is NOT a good idea anymore. I distinctly remember that some wood-lovers tend to fruit against walls/barriers. Monotubs would have too much area for the mycelium to yield maximum fruits.

Thanks everybody.

here is what some people do. Search for waylitjim and check out his grows.

I think he drills a few holes in the Bottom of a tub for drainage. Then fills the tub with 4-8 inches of colonized woodchips or wood chips and spawn mixed together. He lets it colonize and then brings it outside in the fall and allows nature to take over and gets some decent fruits. I have seen this down with cyanescens and friscosas

Yeah but I want me some azures!

The fruiting habits they all follow in the tutorials I've seen on here show that they have the tendency to fruit "against" something.

I bet that burying tons of colonized 1 pint jars each Summer would yield LOTS more fruits in Autumn!!!

The cyans, bohemicas, baeos, canofriscosas, subaeruginosas, weiliis, etc... probably don't fruit against some sort of barrier, for lack of a better term.

It's a growth tendency that I've noticed in my studies so another plan must be explored.

Best Regards.

to think that the fruiting conditions of azures are dramtically different than cyans of friscosas would be silly. I bet that the only thing that might be differnet is the temp.
I bet if you made a few wbs jars of azure and sprinkeled it onto the ground and covered it with a few, no more than 4, inches of wood chips you would get some mushrooms.
The only time that you have seen azures fruit next to a barrier is when you saw some second rate indoor grow.
Since you live in the midwest I would bet that the suggestion to use a tub that you could put outside for a few months before the temps dropped below 30 degrees would work great. You could also move them and water them since I know you all do not have under ground watering systems.
When it comes to this subject, I would listen to me. This is one thing that only a few of us have asctually done.

Yea, all of waylit's grow logs are baffling to me.  He basically uses the monotub model, and gets ABSURD flushes, the craziest I've ever seen for woodlovers.

what do you mean craziest? Good, bad, what?

If you mean good its because he isnt fruiting them indoors. No one here has been able to get a decent flush indoors with a wood lover, or at least they haven't posted about it

I mean good.  I figured he wasn't fruiting inside, I wasn't sure though.  I've seen a couple decent flushes indoors, but you're right, it's usually necessary to fruit outside.

And only the azures tend to "hug" against something. A trait that I've noticed.

I bet 1/2 or even 1 pint jars filling the monotub would provide more fruits.

Cyanescens, cyanofriscosa, weilii, baeo, subarg. All of those I would just make the entire tub the substrate.

Peace
