I've seen him on T.V. a couple times. I think it's really interesting how he is using lasers as a means of time travel. That sounds crazy but this guy is quite ingenious. I'm not sure I even fully understand the concept.

My thoughts on time travel without reading the thread:

If time travel were possible, and we created some time machine, we would only be able to travel as far back as when the time machine was created. Imagine if you say yourself come through the time machine once it was built. This would probably be the end of the world because of some rip in the space-time continuom.

And travelling at the speed of light would cause you to go forward in time according to Einstein's E=mcsquared equation.

As I understand it, the speed of light is a "cosmic speed limit" if you will. I do not think it is possible to exceed it.

Interestingly enough we can reach 99.9% of light speed, but we cannot break it. Einstein stated that it was impossible though many times in his lifetime.

Lol, are you talking about going back in human time? that's pretty preposterous, sorry.  Doesn't happen.
Time is a human concept.

Such incredibly complex notions will never be discovered (pessimist to the core, but i say realist :P) because the scientific / mathematical manner of reporting and recording information is fundamentally flawed, we are using an analogue system to explain a digital environment, if you will.

If you burn [a] amount of Hydrogen, you do not get exactly [x,y,z] of the byproducts.  This is just the best way that humans can simplify it, in a way that is both practical and understandable, but not perfect.

If time travel were possible, then wouldn't 'they' have already traveled back in time to prove its plausible.

yep!!!

or maybe its possible but the technology to do so will never be able to be produced unless millions upon millions of planets full of humans decide to cooperate.

LOL

even if we do spread across the universe we will never get along

Ummm.

From everything I've ever read, I thought the general notion was that time travel was actually theoretically supported by modern physics, but most physicists don't talk about it because obviously it would just attract a bunch of bs, because the way they discuss it isn't the same way the public percieves it.

Isn't it something along the lines of, if you manage to time travel you're basically in another reality/dimension?

Im a bit sleep deprived/drunk, so i don't know.
But thats what I remember reading/hearing. I could definitely be wrong or off here.

Only going back into time is theoretically possible at this moment. Some scientist say if you have a crazy person knocking on your door saying they're a distant relative from the future that you might just want to hear what they have to say, because they might not be so crazy after all...Pretty cool and wild if you ask me. Whats weird though is that no one knows that if you traveled back into the past would you create a new dimension because your existence in the past or would all things continue as normal.

Scientists aren't sure if the future exists or if its tangible with our current knowledge. One thing that is known about going to the future is that their is a massive amount of energy you'd have to break through to even make it possible, so much energy to break through that we might never have the ability.

^^Yeah..

I've actually seen the issue of time traveling adressed on the history channel or discovery channel on either "The Universe" or some other show.

They got into how they could theoretically use black holes to achieve such things, using anti matter to actually expand the opening of a black hole (if you can call it an opening).
All theoretical of course, but who knows what we'll be capable of in a 1000 years, if the human race is still in existance.

I believe it is possible. I cannot state my theory directly in words, only in metaphors/poetry:

Didn't Einstein contemplate time travel was possible if we went a million miles an hr backwards? I remember hearing or reading it somewhere; hopefully some one can back the claim up. Personally to me I believe it is possible. If scientist can read the rings of space and determine things about our universe all the way back from the bing bang; what if we could hop on one of those rings and go back to a certain place in time? I hope for the possibility of time travel, but fear what could happen if it was possible.

That may be true in theory, but you'd have to start a million miles ahead of whatever location you wanted to "visit" and I don't think you'd be able to interact with people from the "past" that way, you'd just be an observer with the odd ability to provess visual information at over a million frames per second.

You are both right.

Without a doubt.

Scientists think that you can travel back in time if you exceed the speed of light. Scientists also say that if you travel at the speed of light for several years through space, when you get back to Earth you will be ahead of your time by several years. Meaning everyone who was your age will be much older than you physically by the time you get back to Earth.

The speed of light is relative to you. If you cease to exists, eg. your ego does not exists, when you come back, you will have taken a step backwards.

Some insight upon reading my words: Losing your ego is only shattering, because you must, again, sync up your time with everyone elses. This is why it comes in waves. This is why we are bound by time. Salted.

Why not?

The fact that physicists such as hawking, and carl sagan discuss these topics and basically agree that its theoretically possible kinda leans me towards the camp of that maybe one day it will be possible.

^^ Wiki actually has some good things to say about it.

I would think for sake of discussion folks should clarify what they mean by "time travel".  Seems these discussions always get hung up on individual preconceptions that aren't communicated-  leading to semantic tomfoolery.

Like is timetravel simply when a point changes its location in time relative to another point?

Or is it only when we can do such by actually disapearing from one time and reapearing in another?  In other words similar to teleportation rather than moving fast?

The second one seems to be discussed or depicted, as much as I can tell, in shows and such, but the first is the only thing that is ever really scientifically discussed or observed in any way right?  Anyone know?

Is it possible to remove yourself from a location and appear somewhere else without traversing the space inbetween?  Ignoring what I think is the quantized nature of space (right- space is quantized correct?) can this be done in theory?  I would think not.

Similarly ignoring any quantized nature of time (is it quantized?  I don't know) it cannot be conceivable under our current understanding to 'teleport' in time without traversing the intermediate times between the start and final times, correct?

More questions here than answers cuz I'm ignorant, but I'm just wondering what the physics folks have to say.  Would you guys agree the two things I'm discussing are quite different and should be distinguished in a discussion liek this?

I've read that even if time travel were possible you could only travel back in time as far back as the day the "time machine" was created.

If you consider time from the thermodynamic perspective, an over-unity perpetual motion device would be a time machine.  Unfortunately that doesnt make it any easier to achieve.

Does anyone have a time machine they would be willing to sell?

The one I have is broken.

It only goes forward and at normal speed.

It is also out of warranty, so I guess I'm SOL.

Well they wouldn't be breaking the laws of physics, so maybe you wouldn't know?
