Is time travel scientifically possible?
    #9661631 -

watching lost, b lazed on a firecracker with a gram of dank, got me thinking.

Anyone know or have theories? I like the idea that you can travel but not change the past

That'd be sweet.
But i dont think it's possible.
I have no theories to back it up.
i just dont see it happening.

I think it's possible.

However, if a human did ever manage to travel back in time, I think the consequences and the experience itself would be far differ from what anyone has been able to imagine. Travelling forward in time, I'm not sure how that would work.

It is a fascinating question though.

Scientists think that you can travel back in time if you exceed the speed of light. Scientists also say that if you travel at the speed of light for several years through space, when you get back to Earth you will be ahead of your time by several years. Meaning everyone who was your age will be much older than you physically by the time you get back to Earth.

As I understand it, the speed of light is a "cosmic speed limit" if you will. I do not think it is possible to exceed it.

Time travel may not be like going literally forward and backward in time, time is simply malleable, it is something that is mysterious, not just linear and dualistic.

That may be true in theory, but you'd have to start a million miles ahead of whatever location you wanted to "visit" and I don't think you'd be able to interact with people from the "past" that way, you'd just be an observer with the odd ability to provess visual information at over a million frames per second.

Re: Is time travel scientifically possible? [Re: DroneLore]
    #9661873 -

Of course its possible. Lookup nonlocality principle.... if every thing in the universe was simultaneously every other thing than you ARE timetravel and have simply not discovered and transcended your current boundaries hindering you from the awareness of the being that is you, right now in your past, and in your future... If everything is one at every instant... than tell me where is the past ?

So yes it is scientifically possible. Explain time dilation... and you know, at a certain point, the equation for gravity flips and all gravity, the foundation of our universe, Gravity, the force in between matter that is infinitely every possibility simultaneously, Gravity flips, inverses in other words and becomes i.

I stands for imaginary.

doesnt that mean that the light is moving faster than its normal rate if its being sucked into something else? time travel is so fucking confusing in my eyes. i dont think we'll ever grasp a hold on it. that LHC a couple of months back, supposedly the protons spinning around in the thing travel are traveling at the last decimal before the speed of light. if its true than thats basically ur proof that it aint possible to travel beyond it. i wish i knew why nothing can travel faster than light..  wtf is light anyways? is it just energy or does it actually take up space as like an object sitting infront of us??

edit: also.. what if you were traveling in your car at the speed of light and you decide to turn on your headlights or your dashboard lights turn on.. wtf would happen?? its all a huge paradox..

No.

I don't get how anyone would think it's possible...

maybe some type of knocking someone out for a few hundred years and implanting them in the future,

but we're not gonna rip through the space time continuum and end up in 15,000 bc,

there's no way.

think about it.

However,

what's far more likely is the existance of parallel universes. Out there somewhere may be exact copies of planet earth, billions of them, with exact copies of each and every person who has ever lived, except some are a few hundred years behind us, some are a few hundred years ahead..

personally I don't think human beings can really comprehend the whole mess that is OUR EXISTENCE,

i could go on forever

Much more likely that the answer to what could be called "time travel" is indeed located in the depths of the universe,

I doubt there will be a kind of "time machine" that takes us back in time on our OWN planet,

but hell,

someday we may be able to harness the power of a black hole or make some kind of device that shifts us through parallel universes,

yea gravity is pretty fucked up too.. where the fuck does it comes from?! the bigger the object is in space, the more gravitational pull it has on smaller object near it.. its so weird. i remember hearing along time ago.. if you have an object balanced above that weights ____ tons, you would float between the object and earth.. i cant remember that magic number nor can i find any info on it right now but that would be badd ass.. basically, the object weights just as much as earth n if u were to walk in the middle of the two, you would be caught in both of the gravitational forces of the two... idk... food for thought..

but why?

Who knows?

and why is the speed of light limited to XXXXXXXXX mph?

Is gravity responsible?

I don't think we'll find anything out by diving into a black hole,

gonna have to make some kind of technology though that lets us explore them,

seems pretty impossible though.

Yeah it's impossible for anything made out of matter to enter a black hole. Black holes destroy the fabric of space and time. Kind of like the opposite of the Big Bang. Anything physical, made out of the fabric of space and time, would be disintegrated into nothing or an infinitely small space.

Gravity is actually fairly well explained by relativity. Dense objects actually curve the space around them, so less dense objects are forced toward them by the curvature. It's like those things where you drop a penny in and it rolls around and around the cone until falling into the hole in the center. Of course, this explanation opens the doors to a whole slew of other questions, such as the nature of space and how it is possible to "curve" it.

That's why science rocks.

time travel is a joke

no one really thinks it through very far.

what would you do with time travel? what would be travelling?
and say you actually ended up in the 'time' you were hoping to reach.. where would you be?

and then theres all of the 'going back and killing your mother' paradox that is only ever ignored by people taking time travel seriously.

unless we consider going back in time discards your universe and implants you into a universe that is identical to your own universe at that time. well first, it couldnt be identical, because all of a sudden the universe has all this mass etc that is there that wouldnt otherwise have been there (your body and timetravel machine which is now 'back in time').
so in going back in time you would have to destroy some of the previous universe in order to make room for yourself.. or else you would violate the conservation of energy

which part of the universe would you be destroying? pertinent question for those science fiction fans trying to entertain time travel

But maybe time is a cycle and certain chemicals can release coded messages in our DNA from our ancestors or our future selves.

Search for Dr. Ronald L. Mallett. This man has devoted his entire life to time travel. All just to go back in time to save his father. Tragically, he realized that the earliest he could go back would be the time when the machine was developed. It's a very sad non-fiction story. I guess it makes sense though. I feel very sorry for him though. The moment of that realization must have been crushing after literally spending his entire life working towards such a singular selfless goal.

It makes me uneasy though. People tinkering with time etc.. I am fascinated with technology, but the what ifs...

My thoughts on time travel without reading the thread:

If time travel were possible, and we created some time machine, we would only be able to travel as far back as when the time machine was created. Imagine if you say yourself come through the time machine once it was built. This would probably be the end of the world because of some rip in the space-time continuom.

And travelling at the speed of light would cause you to go forward in time according to Einstein's E=mcsquared equation.

Time is a human concept.

Such incredibly complex notions will never be discovered (pessimist to the core, but i say realist :P) because the scientific / mathematical manner of reporting and recording information is fundamentally flawed, we are using an analogue system to explain a digital environment, if you will.

If you burn [a] amount of Hydrogen, you do not get exactly [x,y,z] of the byproducts.  This is just the best way that humans can simplify it, in a way that is both practical and understandable, but not perfect.

Ummm.

From everything I've ever read, I thought the general notion was that time travel was actually theoretically supported by modern physics, but most physicists don't talk about it because obviously it would just attract a bunch of bs, because the way they discuss it isn't the same way the public percieves it.

Isn't it something along the lines of, if you manage to time travel you're basically in another reality/dimension?

Only going back into time is theoretically possible at this moment. Some scientist say if you have a crazy person knocking on your door saying they're a distant relative from the future that you might just want to hear what they have to say, because they might not be so crazy after all...Pretty cool and wild if you ask me. Whats weird though is that no one knows that if you traveled back into the past would you create a new dimension because your existence in the past or would all things continue as normal.

Scientists aren't sure if the future exists or if its tangible with our current knowledge. One thing that is known about going to the future is that their is a massive amount of energy you'd have to break through to even make it possible, so much energy to break through that we might never have the ability.

^^Yeah..

I've actually seen the issue of time traveling adressed on the history channel or discovery channel on either "The Universe" or some other show.

They got into how they could theoretically use black holes to achieve such things, using anti matter to actually expand the opening of a black hole (if you can call it an opening).
All theoretical of course, but who knows what we'll be capable of in a 1000 years, if the human race is still in existance.

That may be true in theory, but you'd have to start a million miles ahead of whatever location you wanted to "visit" and I don't think you'd be able to interact with people from the "past" that way, you'd just be an observer with the odd ability to provess visual information at over a million frames per second.

You are both right.

Scientists think that you can travel back in time if you exceed the speed of light. Scientists also say that if you travel at the speed of light for several years through space, when you get back to Earth you will be ahead of your time by several years. Meaning everyone who was your age will be much older than you physically by the time you get back to Earth.

The speed of light is relative to you. If you cease to exists, eg. your ego does not exists, when you come back, you will have taken a step backwards.

Some insight upon reading my words: Losing your ego is only shattering, because you must, again, sync up your time with everyone elses. This is why it comes in waves. This is why we are bound by time. Salted.

The fact that physicists such as hawking, and carl sagan discuss these topics and basically agree that its theoretically possible kinda leans me towards the camp of that maybe one day it will be possible.

I would think for sake of discussion folks should clarify what they mean by "time travel".  Seems these discussions always get hung up on individual preconceptions that aren't communicated-  leading to semantic tomfoolery.

Like is timetravel simply when a point changes its location in time relative to another point?

Or is it only when we can do such by actually disapearing from one time and reapearing in another?  In other words similar to teleportation rather than moving fast?

The second one seems to be discussed or depicted, as much as I can tell, in shows and such, but the first is the only thing that is ever really scientifically discussed or observed in any way right?  Anyone know?

Is it possible to remove yourself from a location and appear somewhere else without traversing the space inbetween?  Ignoring what I think is the quantized nature of space (right- space is quantized correct?) can this be done in theory?  I would think not.

Similarly ignoring any quantized nature of time (is it quantized?  I don't know) it cannot be conceivable under our current understanding to 'teleport' in time without traversing the intermediate times between the start and final times, correct?

More questions here than answers cuz I'm ignorant, but I'm just wondering what the physics folks have to say.  Would you guys agree the two things I'm discussing are quite different and should be distinguished in a discussion liek this?

I've read that even if time travel were possible you could only travel back in time as far back as the day the "time machine" was created.

If you consider time from the thermodynamic perspective, an over-unity perpetual motion device would be a time machine.  Unfortunately that doesnt make it any easier to achieve.

It only goes forward and at normal speed.

It is also out of warranty, so I guess I'm SOL.

Because time is relative to the beholder; forget it exists, and it won't.

the fact that physicists such as hawking, and carl sagan believe these topics to be true basically makes you agree with them. It is theoretically possible. Kinda leans me to believe your camp.

God, soul, self. It exists. If it didn't the universe wouldn't exist. Whether you believe it's a part of the universe is another matter. An entirely irrelevant one.

just because your matter moves at a relative speed faster or slower than all other matter, does not mean that you have travelled in time.
Similarly, if you're all talking about going back and looking at dinosaurs, then that's just ludicris.  Time is non-existant, and the events that transpire through history cannot be re witnessed.

Why anyone would want to explore this is beyond me anyway.  We have enough problems in the present to be wanting to move outside of it.

time is a man-made method of making scheduling his/her day easier?

clocks are the tools that help us measure this method.

personally, i think maybe this idea is insane (that time is non-existent) because it is very real to me.

i can understand what people are getting at and it certainly is food for thought.. but its going a little too deep into things if you ask me.
i'd rather save my brain power for things more along the meaning of life, and who i am exactly :awesome:

i once saw a study to prove/disprove time travel. a college student hosted a large kind of party inviting all people from the future. there will be free food and coffee, hoping to gain enough publicity for it to be well-known about. people in the future would see this recorded, hop in their time machines and check it out.

no one showed.

doesn't prove or disprove anything i guess. his arguement was that no one showed up becasue of maybe catastrophic events, time travelers were too busy, etc.

Time is a fundamental part of our dimension. It is not some man-made concept. It actually exists and in fact there is a direct link between gravity and the flow of time. Time is just a creation of our reality that exists to establish a sequential order of events to prevent everything from happening simultaneously. It's just an illusion of our reality and perception but it does exist within the tapestry of our physical universe.

Time is just the rotation of the planet measured.

Sure time is a 'man made concept' in the same manner that length, mass or charge are all man made concepts.  Saying its a man made concept doesn't mean anything and sure doesn't negate the usefullness of considering time.

Time is not just the rotation of the planet measured either (that doesn't really make sense because to measure the rotation of the planet you have to beg to an external 'time').

Time is the measure of the progression from improbable states to probable states.  Also knows as an increase in entropy (the arrow of time).  Another definition is more abstract, in that time is one of the four dimensions of spacetime - the fabric in which all phenomenon occur.

no.

They did it by looking at the position of the sun in the sky.

The rotation.

Science does not concern itself with time.  Does it matter if they do a experiment on wednesday or tuesday? at 2:00pm or 2:00am?

Yes, absolutely.

In physics, time is a fundamental unit that is used to define other units such as velocity, acceleration, etc.  There are seven fundamental units: second, kilogram, meter, ampere, kelvin, candela, and mole.

By claiming that time doesn't exist, you are confusing philosophy with science.

Yes it does matter.  How do you know when your intial time was?

t0 = something

first increment , t1= something

Just as i may be concerned with the change in molarity of a reactant in some reaction if I'm doing some measurements of a chemical reaction in process (god help me if I am) I will be interested in the change in time.

What is the rate?  What is the halflife?  What is any of the other inane things physical chemists measure?

You're saying it doesn't matter?  Or are you trying to differentiate the manner in which we determine time from time itself?  i.e. are you tryiing to argue in the earth example that we aren't measuring time when we are measuring the earth change its position predictably to determine the hour and such? Likewise with quartz watches and so on?

If that's your point, does length exist?  Are we really measuring length when we measure a bar?  Seems that could only be an argument against everything that we don't have perfect percision on rather than a unique indictment of time.

----

Seuss, I never got the amp thing as the fundamental electric unit.  Is its status as a fundamental unit just a historical artifact kinda like the direction of current flow being inopposite to the actual electron movement?  I mean why wouldn't charge be the fundamental unit since it appears everywhere in electrical measurements but amps don't?

> Seuss, I never got the amp thing as the fundamental electric unit.

It does seem odd, since amperes are coulombs per second and coulombs are a fundamental quantity.  However, the ampere is easy to measure while the coulomb is not.  To measure a coulomb, we actually measure amperes over time to derive the number of coulombs.
