Alaska Homesteading
    #9662858 -

I got curious and researched this

http://dnr.alaska.gov/mlw/landsale/otc/index.cfm

I see that for the over-the-counter lots, you can get almost 5 acres for a little less than 3k in the cold as all hell northern region.

What are the odds that a city boy like me who's barely seen snow would survive.  I am an eagle scout though.

Build a tiny cabin, farm fish and maybe potatoes.  I think it could be done.

Probably no internet though.  I wonder which would be better for electricity if I were inclined to get some.

haha i think that would be cool i mean living out in the wilderness. i don't know if i could see me farming fish, etc. i wouldn't want to move to the snow. you could prob. survive but i think the snow would get old 24/7. It would be fun to snowboard all the time though!! I Would rather move to the ocean by the redwoods in the mountains or something. and i would definitely want a town or city kind of close by

Ya, I tried that, but there's no that many remote places by the coast, and remote or not they're all expensive.  I figure this would be a good way to not have to work for the man.  Get a fat stack of books for the winter time.  Live the old fashioned way in the summer.

I'd only ever do this if someone else went for the ride.  If it were me alone, if we weren't making do, I'd be too stubborn to leave and I'd freeze or starve or whatnot.  Need someone else to tell me when to call it quits, and to maybe grab the other end of the fishing net, so we could scoop out more tasty fishies.  One person pays 3k for the land, the other pays 3k for basic supplies.  I figure that would cover essentials like tools and building supplies to make the cabin, a couple nets, some spud seeds or tubes, whichever is the correct term.  If we really wanted to splurge, a solar panel, and enough wire for a single light and a single socket, and a 20amp circuit.

Looks more like 6 grand.  That might be the way to go.  I'd have to save up for that though, although that's not so hard to make.

It would be really cool to be able to get the 50 acre plot I'm seeing for 30k.

That way, there's plenty of ground to forage for berries and hunt game (bears, moose fair game??)

5kw wind turbine in 240v and a 200 amp service, you'll need 2
structures, one to work in, that's what will requite the most
electric, one to live in

bear tastes like ass, berries wont last all winter, you only have a
couple months in northern alaska, I know it gets to around -60F
above fairbanks and effectively you have perma frost so very little
will grow, you'll never get half the seed you plant to germinate

Wind turbine is definitely a better idea than solar, which would only work well half the year.

5kw cost more than 20k up in alaska from a quick search.  I'm seeing some 400w ones going for around a grand though.  I don't think I'd need more than that, although I'd have to do some math.  I wouldn't be running power tools or a heater or anything like that.  A simple stove and chimney is all I'd need for heat.

Oh, and a third structure, which would be a locker for food storage, to save that fish and game for rough times.

google "desert land entry act" ... of 1892 i think

any us citizen can take over 320 acres of land for $1 an acre if you farm it.  and the law is still on the books, and valid.

actually an old shroomery member, actually did one of these.

good deal imho

available in 11 western states.

Looking it up now.  I thought all real homesteading was dead (this is under some other law than the Homestead Act).

The Desert Land Act of
1877 (43 U.S.C. 321-323)

Indeed

I'm looking up the US Code now to read the fine print, then I'll see if there's any and if so which available land in CA, probably near the Palm Spring and outlying areas.

If not CA, then NM near where my dad just bought an assload of property.

Here's the code

http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-bin/usc.cgi?ACTION=BROWSE&TITLE=43USCC9

These are the states

California, Colorado, Oregon, Nevada, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Utah, Wyoming, Arizona, New Mexico, and North and South Dakota.

And it's $1.25 an acre up to 320 acres

.25 up front and 1 to finalize after inspection

They sure don't make it sound easy on the OBM site.

I'm not buying the 250k figure though.

Nothing says it has to be a modern aqueduct.  It just has to pass whatever limited engineering specs the OBM lays out (which they have little authority to enforce).  The real law backing the water delivery system would be like, the Clean Water Act, maybe.  I'd have to look into what applies, especially that which applies to personal consumption only.

The 1/8 of the land figure is encouraging though.  It's a lot easier to irrigate 40 acres than it is 320, that's for sure.

K, I'm ordering a 110-page map from the CA BLM office for 4 bucks.

FYI, one can also stake mining claims through the BLM on public land, which is the only other surviving provision of the original purview of the BLM.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/General_Mining_Act_of_1872

If anyone has any more ideas or comments along the vein of getting land for free and such, keep it coming.

It might just be easier to take advantage of CA's liberal adverse possession laws, although it comes with the risk of not working at all.

Ok, I've pulled up maps of BLM land, there's quite a bit of it in CA in the Mojave desert area.

http://www.geocommunicator.gov/blmMap/Map.jsp?MAP=LAND
(uncheck all except BLM)

Cross-referencing that with water tables, the best bet is the Coachella canal which runs along Imperial county.  Colorodo River along the eastern border is another bet, but I don't know what the water rights are there yet.  It would be nice if I knew of some secret underground water tables.  I could always spend some time in the desert the next couple years drilling a bunch of random ass holes in the ground.(no probably not)

Another hurdle I have to check out is what law come with the National Landscape Conservation System, which was created in 2000.  The whole freaking desert is classified under this.  Hopefully that doesn't disqualify it off the bat.

if that's the case, you will surely die, homesteading in a sub
tropical area poses a lot of challenges, many of which require
power tools
