Moving to Alaska
    #3032151 -

Due to pressures in the continental US myself, my fiancee, one of my best friends and his fiancee are moving to southwestern Alaska sometime next summer. Does anyone on the Shroomery live there? I'm mainly looking for info on universities on SW Alaska as well as job opportunities. Even your travel story is welcome, just trying to gather as much info as possible before we make our first trip up there

The area we are looking at is Homer. There are around 550 people there with commercial fishing licenses and between those people, over 27 million was made last year. Halibut is ridiculously abundant

Avg temps are 14-27 F in Winter and 55-70 in Summer. The best part are the home prices. 10+ acres and a nice 2 bed home are anywhere from $50k to $95k.

This is the view we would have out our front door. Anchorage is 225mi north.

I hear that they actually pay you to live in Alaska as well.

Hmm, my friend that I am moving up there with mentioned that last night. I thought it may be BS since it came from his border patrol uncle, its nice to hear it twice. I'll look into that

hmm... looks to be sort of true

The state government will not pay you to move to Alaska. It will not help pay your expenses.

Moving expenses will have to come out of your pocket or the pocket of the company or organization you work for.

There is some "free" money, though, handed out each fall in the form of the Permanent Fund dividend. This is available to full-time residents who spent the previous calendar year in the state and continue to live here.

There's no free land for homesteading, either.

Oh - living so far north, you get great midnight sun (and 24 hour darkness in the winter :frown: )... really fun!

Here is the dream house. Has plenty of acreage to expand on and would be no problem to make it look nice. I hope its not sold by the time we get there

If that link doesn't work then just type 4408814 in the property ID field under Find a Property
I love the photos at the bottom, especially the one in the top row center.

I don't think I would mind it. I am always awake during the night and early morning so why not have some sun? Part of the move is for adventure and I'm sure cold dark winters will allow for plenty of that :stoned:

dude I bet that's alaska in the summertime   and it still looks freezing cold hehe.  but hey, go for it!!!

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.

Alaska is up towards the top of my list of places that I want to visit. I don't know if I would want to live there though.

yeah it is really strange living in such a climate - i lived in north-western norway for 2 summer and 2 winters, and it certainly was an experience!

I went there many years ago, it's very nice, cold but nice. Also, I think pot has just been legalized up there, they treat it like alcohol, 21 and up and you can get it.

Hmm, I didn't know it was legalized up there yet. I heard about the bill, but I hadn't really heard anything about it passing or not.

I'm pretty sure it passed, you can have enough for personal use, Im not sure how much the limit is. I dont know about being able to legally purchase it, but Im 99% sure your allowed to possess a small amount. They are considering a 3lb maximum also  I am the best friend of organic and have done my research, i cant wait to move up there, its gonna be the shizit man  24 hour sunlight=primo buds
