A sign stating your destination can be helpful

Dress clean cut and look "presentable" (important!)

Don't reveal more than you need to like how much money you have, drugs, or things of value.

Check out the driver before you get into the car, hesitate before you get in, and don't be afraid to turn down rides.

Carry a road atlas always

Make sure that you're not getting dropped off in the middle of a desert where there's no traffic.

Carry a knife.

Don't thumb in front of cops.

If you are having trouble getting rides from an on-ramp, chat with truckers at a truck stop. These guys are weary but usually friendly and travel long distances.

shit yeah man, i forgot about ripping off fast food places. walk up to the cash and tell them you ordered like two happy meals and whatever, say you're missing like a cheeseburger, large fries and a coke from various meals. they usually give you what you want, if they say they don't remember serving you tell them you came in with your uncle or some shit and they're out in the car eating and sent you to get the food and if they still don't let you ask to talk to the manager and 90% of the time youll get it.
