be super nice to the cops
do tack a sleeping bag and some shelter
don't bother hitching at night hide and sleep
a camp stove and some beans and rice can keep you from starving
do keep a jug of water with you

my girlfriend just moved 3hrs away to New Paltz, ny. Awesome little town. Assuming this long distance thing works. I'm pessimisstic, but she is awesome, then I have been contemplating hitchiking from centeral PA. Its all interstate. I live along rt. 80 and she lives along rt. 87. 80-81-84-87. Its getting back I'm concerned about. I figure  someone at the local truck stop would give me a ride. But, 87 doesn't really have a truck stop.... Idk, its an idea.

i hitchhiked around canada's east coast this summer with no money or much of anything. bring some garbage bags. they come in handy for every thing from a raincoat to waterproofing a book to storing some mad dumpster scores. if you don't have money, you best acquaint yoself with the dumpsters, in north america 50% of food is thrown out, so theres a lot of very edible stuff in there. i just was on the road for just over a month, but some of the kids i met live off dumpster food, even dumpstering meat without any illness (that i heard of). im vegetarian so i just stuck to the usual bagels and veggies. it sounds pretty dirty, but those first few days of nothing to eat open your mind a little. i was dead set against it and it took me a while to get over that. just remember- no gluttony, no shame. talk to some of the crusty punks or any street kid and theyll tell you where the best dumpsters are or like a drop-in centre/good shepherd/whatever where they'll give you a nice hot meal. those kids look pretty intimidating but they always show respect to poor travelling kids (in my experience).
also, hitchhiking alone gets you picked up way faster, and i've never had a bad experience with someone who has picked me up. not to say it doesnt happen, but if you're a big enough guy (which im not) nobody's gonna fuck with you. be very sociable with the driver and they might buy you food or even let you stay at their house (use good judgement). i once met a super intense evangelical christian who picked me up, he gave me a four hour long jesus talk, but in the end took me out for dinner and bought me groceries for the rest of my trip. also a funny sign makes people more likely to pick you up or at least give you a honk (which can brighten your spirits after 6 hours of standing on the side of a highway), me and my buddy once made a big thumb out of cardboard and ducttaped it to my hand and at least got some people to laugh.
also, if you don't bring id, its less sketchy panhandling, cops can't do much and usually just kick you out so you can go panhandle somewhere else. thats in canada at least, i don't know about the states.
cardboard is good to sleep on and easily dumpsterable, if you're in a concrete jungle. sleeping under overpasses on the open highway is safe but loud. i talked to a guy who lived on the street for four years and he said if you climb to the top of the stairs in a tall building to where it exits onto the roof nobody ever goes up there and thats the best shelter you can get for free. once i slept in a display shed outside a canadian tire which was probably my best shelter.
finally just be super positive and super open to the new world you're entering into, make friends and learn from them.
