Gran Torino
    #9575845 -

I'm not a huge movie buff, I don't really watch a lot of movies unless I'm pretty sure they are going to be good.

Saw Gran Turino last night and holy fuck.

It basically blew my expectations out of the water.
Don't think I've been moved by a movie like that in years.

There's no chemical explosions and the special effects are virtually non-existent, so if that's all you like in movies it's probably not for you.

But goddamn.

Epic.

I thought it was a pretty hilarious movie.  Outside of Eastwood, most of the acting was god-awful (the young priest, for example, and the kid, Tao or whatever); and Eastwood himself spent 3/4 of the movie making racist remarks and one-liners, which were the things I remembered about the movie much more than its specific plot elements.  It was a compelling story with a good message at its heart, but the sheer silliness of hearing Old Man Eastwood grumpily calling people "fish-heads" and "dragon-lady" is what really made the whole thing worthwhile.

any fear at all, for whenever I will—
and I will have the will, strengthened
as I’ll be with contemplation and study—
at the crucial moments I’ll recover
my spirit as was before: ascetic.”

Yeah some of the acting was kind of bad. Especially the scene where the black guys were picking on the chick, her remarks just seemed so forced. And there was a few cheesy parts. But I looked past that.. I thought the whole plot progressed pretty well, and Eastwood is a true pimp. And I gotta admit the drive-by part got me all teary eyed and shit, which doesn't really happen.

The acting was god awful and Eastwood was a caricature in it, but I still enjoyed it. Usually bad acting ruins a movie for me, but not this one for some reason. It was a feel good movie, but not a typical one. I like the realism in that even though Eastwood came to accept his neighbors and their race, he couldn't kick all of his bad habits (still good-naturedly using racial slurs)/

Overall, I think it is definitely worth a watch.

Righteous Kill, on the other hand, was a fucking travesty. I couldn't have dreamed up a more predictable movie if I tried. Also, Deniro and Pacino mailed in their performances. It looked like they both just needed a paycheck.

I like feel good movies
especially when they deal with overcoming boundaries and whatnot and touch on real human emotions.
I dunno, this one just did it for me.

Gran Torino was very good. It's easily in the top ten movies of the year. However, the #1 slot belongs to The Wrestler. The plot is good and Mickey Rourke's acting is absolutely phenomenal. If he doesn't get the Oscar for best actor I'll be very surprised. You should check it out. Don't let the fact that it's about a professional wrestler dissuade you from seeing it. It's more about the main characters life and his struggle to come to terms with his age and to reconnect with his daughter than wrestling itself.

It was done by the guy who directed Pi and Requiem for a Dream.

I've heard that The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is supposed to be really good too but I haven't seen it yet.

I liked it due to Eastwood, but without him this is a terrible movie/script and the lead kid is really....bad

Gran Torino was pretty good.  A great movie that I wasn't expecting was Slumdog Millionaire; I really enjoyed it.
