Pffft pictures, notes, oral history and other purely sentimental stuff like that is infinitely more valuable then some garish jewelery that doesn't even tell a story. How far you willing to go to get it back? You'd have to do something quick otherwise he's going to sell it. You know his address, is he married? does he live alone? Does he go out of town a lot?

If so, wait till he goes to work, grab a bible and dress nicely and walk up to the door in order to "ask him if he has accepted Jesus into his heart" or at least that's what you'll say if someone answers, mainly just as a test to see if anyone else is home and in case it's daylight the neighbors will just think you're some douche who can't mind their damn business, then just find a way in and look around but make it snappy, and make sure to bring fake pamphlets with you and if a neighbor spots you searching around just pretend you're putting one somewhere. There is many ways to make sure he gets his just desserts without causing him physical harm, sometimes you have to think like a criminal in order to beat one :shrug:
Of course I'm not advocating actually doing it since it's a illegal and you could get a number of charges if you were to get caught, but if you're willing to take the risk or planning to, then this would be my suggestion

Just fyi, if a person keeps a spare key outside of their house for emergencies, which a lot do, 95% of the time the key is basically within reaching distance of the door, is there a ledge on top of the door? potted plants nearby? a welcome mat? a mulch bed with one random rock on it? It's usually sad how easy they are to find if there is one, not that I would know.

If he pawns it then the police can help you. If you have pictures or descriptions they will check every pawn shop around.

happened to my relative, apt. Complex, could have been workers for complex or pest control, both had keys, cops did nothing,I don't live in the area,relative got big insurance check though,company tried 2 lowball offers before offering a realistic one ,so don't accept low offers the first couple times,at least u know the guys name ,let a year go by then.......

So... the police spoke to the thief. He caved in and confessed to his crime. He said he was sorry and wished he never done it...
The police went to the store he sold the jewellery too and.... NOPE! They could not find my grans. Now, there's a chance the store melts the jewellery down if they struggle to sell it :kingcrankey::makesmecry:

It made it TEN TIMES worse that my gran thought she was getting her stuff back, but then to be kicked when shes down, to find out they may have fucking melted her priceless possessions.

WHAT DO??

Fucking someone over and being a tough guy isn't as easy as it seems, a lot can go wrong; and even if it doesn't you either have to watch over your back or deal with the fact that you dropped a body, both would leave you with a lot of anxiety.

I have a good idea but others here may not like it.

If you feel the charges he's going to face aren't enough, maybe down the line the police find a meth lab or related materials on his property, he might get in some serious trouble..

I feel for you and your family's lost- I'd be furious if that happened to me.

I know in most states pawn stores are supposed to hold the item for a certain period before they can do anything with it. They probably bought it knowing it was stolen, gave the dude no receipt and melt it down so it cant be tracked. Damn dirty pawn stores.
