needle too short to penatrate top layer of vermiculite

hello all,
My wheat berry jars turned out great yesterday, and I knocked them up last night. For the ones that have a layer of vermiculite on top of the grain, Im afraid that the needle tip could not penetrate all the way through the layer of verm. therefor, some of the liquid just got squirted on top of the verm. Will the spore solution simply flow through the verm layer and reach the grains, or should I destroy the protective verm layer by giving them a shake to distribute the spores? (used 1 cc B+ per 1q jar)
Thanks for the help guys! -Harry Mannbakk

You're not supposed to use verm as a filter with grains because grains need to be shaken half way through colonization. That's why you never fill grain jars more than 2/3 full. Use tyvek, micropore tape, polyfill, or synthetic filter disks. RR

QFT although a dab of RTV on the injection site never hurt anybody.

Or use the rtv as an injection port.

I wouldn't with the verm on top, may have contaminates.

no, they are about 3/4 full with 1cm verm, already inoculated, but the needle didn't reach all the way through the verm. layer

shake em, mix it up. if its still soon after u knocked em up.
top layer of verm is for pf-tek style jars not bulk grain. fyi.
if it hasnt been too long after knocking them up go ahead and shake. then again when its 50% colonized(just dont shake to mess up your filter). Put some type of 'filter' over/in your hole(s) on your jar AFTER u shake the first time or u will clog your filter when shaking.
this is only suggested for this situation.
good luck.

the vermiculite was added (dry) on top of the grains when I loaded the jars so the verm was pc'ed. Lids: 20 in all, 5 polyfill lid down, 5 polyfill lid up, 5 micropore lid down, 5 micropore lid up because I wanted to experiment with the lids while using the same batch of grains and syringe to determine the best method for me. At lest that way, something can be learned from even a bad result.
In fact, some jars are 3/4 with no vermiculite at all, and the needle still didn't penetrate into the grain, should I shake those jars?

It doesn't need to penetrate into the grain

no, dont shake those they should b fine.
theirs just nothing for myc to grow on in the verm layer or enough moisture in the "dry" verm to germinate your spores. shake only the jars w/verm on top.

I was just talking about this in another thread..I learned that verm alone can actually be used to grow mushrooms on,I never would have thought this to be true but it was RR himself who I talked to about this and I highly doubt he is wrong

thanks for all the support!
I decided to not shake the jars with grain only, and to shake only 2 or 3 jars with the vermiculite layer, so I will wait a few days and let all you guys know about these jars and the results of this experimental grow. (by experimental i mean finding out what works best for me, I don't want to take credit for any tek that i describe, only my results)
