Needle on syringe too short
    #619214 - 04/26/02 07:58 AM (22 years, 4 months ago)

I am sorry if the answer to this is somewhere in the FAQ but I couldn't find it.....

I am about to start my second attempt at growing P.Cubensis (the first failed because the jar took far too long to colonise)

One of the problems I encountered was that the needle on my spore syringe is relatively short....if i leave a 1/2 inch gap between the substrate and the top of the jar the tip of the needle only just touches the top of the substrate which means its virtually impossible to streak the substrate up the sides of the jar.  My boyfriend suggested creating 4 'rivulets' in the substrate with a needle or something before sterilisation so that the spores can be injected at the top and will travel down this path.  However, I'm a bit doubtful about this because surely it will create an open pathway for contaminants as well.  Any help on how to resolve this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Also,  a minor query...is it Ok to use a cotton tea towel to line the bottom of the pan while sterilising with no ill effects, and once the pan is brought to the boil, should it be left boiling (ie. on highest temp.) or left to simmer?!

Sorry to bang on but I want to get the best possible chance of succeeding this time

Don't leave a gap between the substrate and the lid.

fill the jar up more.....and fill the top 1/2" with dry plain Verm.

also use 1 1/2" needles.

yes you should use a towel in the bottom of your pan if you don't have a Divot or a veggie steamer.
the towel will keep the jars from being in contact with the heat from the bottom of the pan.

You should keep it at a boil....the whole time.

good luck!

Also be sure to wipe any substrate off the glass, around the sides, where the verm only layer is going to be. Or contams will follow this nutritous path past the verm and down into the motherload.
Be sure your holes are near the edge. With a 1 1/2" needle, it should look like this:

*note this pic was taken of a jar full of coarse verm just so the needle would show up. I stole it from PF. (sorry)

this is sarph's bf:
bump
i'm not sure how long the needle is, but using our jars (which are bigger than US ones) the needle only touches the very top of the substrate.
This is while using a half-inch to an inch of vermiculite i think, but maybe less.
Anyone else got any help?
james

They don't exist in the UK.
At least, not as far as i've found, and i've looked pretty damn hard.
If anyone in the UK knows of anywhere smaller jars can be got, that would be great

this is now me again, they are actuallly not as big as we thought -they are half pint jars

is it ok to make four more holes nearer the sides? do we need to fill the others in or can you just leave the micropore tape over them?!

Make more holes. Tape over the old ones should be fine.
I don't know what mycopore tape is. I use freezer / masking
tape.
When you innoc, peel the tape back just far enough to inject,
add spores, and press the tape back down.
Sounds like you're on your way.
Good Luck.
