I think the fact that you made a poll about this answers the question!

Everyone puts up a front, the only variation is the degree. That's why half of all marriages end in divorce. It's the little things you didn't know about the other person, or things they just didn't do in front of you before.

Whether you act completely false or not, most everyone is on better if not their best behavior the first few dates. Nobody acts like that all the time.

I agree it's good advice to be yourself if you're looking for a long term relationship. If you're just after sex, tell her what she wants to hear and do your thing.

That being said though, even if you are yourself, it's your best version of yourself for at least the first couple of months. You tend to be less mindful of the small stuff after a while.

I've been married for 5 years and while I haven't had any huge personality shockers, there are quirks that everyone keeps hidden until you've been together for quite some time. I'm sure there are things about me my wife wasn't fully aware of until a couple of years down the road. It's human nature. When  you're first starting out, you're trying like hell to make a good impression.

I think the whole idea of "dating" is kind of contrived, it leads to overthinking because people are looking for a relationship.  It`s a means to an end a lot of the time.  Was it Jerry Seinfeld who said it?:  It`s like a job interview that lasts all night.

I just live my life and encounter new people here and there, and if I like them, I arrange to encounter them again.  It`s painful to watch people on a `date`.

Welcome evermore to gods and men is the self-helping man.  For him all doors are flung wide: him all tongues greet, all honors crown, all eyes follow with desire.  Our love goes out to him and embraces him, because he did not need it.

To say be just be yourself is a gross over-simplification.

Would any women date me if I came up to them naked and covered in scar burns and just said will you date me?

No they would not.  Why?  Because we judge people by appearance then by what they say.

This is proof that everything about dating is false.

It takes years before couples forget their idealism's and realize the true nature of their partner and at that point they usually divorce and find a new person to repeat the cycle with.

Lies give you an advantage in dating, that is obvious.  Even you putting your suit on in the morning or you wearing some make-up is a mask, is a lie whether intended or not your cannot stop the conscious or unconscious judgments it will receive.

Begs the question, what does a person fall in love with?

I think the answer is a fantasy.
