i feel ya man we just got heat about a week ago and we were getting subzero windchill temps nightly. if the house didnt leak so much air it wouldnt be bad. i use a space heater to heat my room and that is about it. now our heat is on but it never goes above 55....cheap ass roommates

I believe its illegal to not provide a tenant with heat.

Yeah, it's definitely illegal. The law in New Jersey is that the landlord has to have the heat on by October 15th at the latest. Not sure what the cut off date is.

It started snowing here around 10am, and we already have about 4-5 inches.

Jesus... what's the point?

Heat is supposed to make a living space comfortable. 55 degrees is nuts. Might as well not even bother turning it on.

55 is where we turn it down to when we want it to be "off" but still on just enough to keep the pipes from freezing.

Our heat is set to 70 most of the time... I can't really imagine keeping it at 55... I'd just as soon live outside...

There are def squatter's rights in NYC. Unfortunately I am going through a pain in the ass with this right now, with a former roommate who refused to pay rent and is still squatting in my old apartment, much to the chagrin of my landlady. So firsthand, there is def something to it. They are taking him through court but he has been living rent free for months. not advocating this, but in your case OMR, sounds semi-justified...

lol what a bunch of hippie crap. Here they'll give you three days to get the fuck out, and then the cops come in to arrest you, and throw your belongings in the garbage.

a requirement in our contract to keep the pipes from freezing is the point, we wear sweaters and use space heaters in our rooms. it blows but rent with bills is only 240 a month

it's as simple as an eviction, people cannot squat an occupied space, if you rent an apartment someone cant just park their ass and claim squatters rights, it only holds for abandoned properties and even then it doesnt take anything to get them out

It is estimated that in the 1990s there were between 500 and 1,000 squatters occupying 32 buildings on Manhattan's Lower East Side. The buildings had been abandoned as a result of speculation by owners or police raids as part of a crackdown on drug use.[41] As the area became gentrified, the squats were evicted, Dos Blockos being one. Three buildings on 13th Street were evicted without notification following a prolonged legal battle in which the squatters argued through their lawyer Stanley Cohen that they were entitled to ownership of the buildings through adverse possession since they had lived there since 1983.In 1995 a preliminary injunction had been granted against the eviction plans, but this was overturned by state appellate.

if you're not the one squatting then it's second hand and
it's something that's been shot down regularly, first you
have to occupy the space for a certain amount of time,
several years and the purpose is to gain legal title to the
abandoned property. you cannot squat a rental

Day 5 of no heat. We complained to the city.

i'd say increase your food uptake to steadily throughout the day so that way you're producing heat from digestion

that or get your roommates to help you "mock-rob" your landlord and demand that heat be returned to all rooms in the building that are without, and that you know multiple rooms don't have heat

I live in abject poverty, and sometimes there is no hot water in the morning. This means I will have to wash my face in icy cold water with a blue rag and then wipe inside and behind my ears. Then I have to resort to lathering my left hand with soap (never my right. it's a personal rule.) in the frigid confines of my barren bathtub and vigorously washing my armpits, genitals, and asscrack while kneeling down and taking care not to get my legs or upper body splashed with cold water. If I can't have a comfortable warm shower, then the least I could do is to attack the vital areas.

My entire apartment is a cold and lonely box. It's been this way for years. Even animals aren't treated this badly.

There's nothing you can do.

Maybe find a new apartment?  Just a suggestion.

I'm fairly poor, but my place is cozy, with a working furnace and water heater.

No way, this is the sweetest apartment I have ever lived in, both in terms of the interior, my room in particular, and location.
