27 degrees, snowing, and no heat.

Third day running we have no heat. We haven't a leg to stand on insofar as complaining to the city goes, because our landlord is a shady fuck who already almost kicked us out this summer and we have to play nice with him. He keeps saying he's coming to fix the boiler and he doesn't. Fuck. So pissed.

What's broken on it?

Does it just need to be re-lit?

Go buy a ceramic heater, they work pretty well.  I have one for when my heat goes out.

I don't know about the landlord/tennant laws in the US...but in Canada, you can get away with witholding your rent if your landlord is fucking around with vital services like heat the in middle of winter blizzard, or running water and stuff like that.

In the meantime, you need heated blankets, space heaters and whiskey.

I'm at work (which is blissfully heated) right now, but you pretty much just described my day yesterday. Couch, blanket, space heater, a bottle of Jim Beam, season 3 of Heroes, and season 3 of Northern Exposure.

we've got heat at least, but they were in the middle of re-shingling the roof when this thing hit. another rental. I keep hearing what can only be described as 'The Roof Coming Off'.

Hey D, how long has it been snowing in Brooklyn?

It hasn't started here yet. it was originally slated for noonish, but the forecasters have pushed back to 3 now.

Also, no heat when the snow storm STARTS... that's unusual. I hope your power stays on.

We have all electric in our apartment... (including heat) if the electricity goes out during the storm, we be fucked.

Sounds like you're in the same boat now! heh.

Someone just came into our office and said it's reached Worcester, which means we've probably got another hour and a half before it's here... depends on how fast it's moving, though, I guess.

it works the same way here but it's best to escrow the cash
or deduct the repairs  from the rent and submit a copy of the
receipt, in the case of you guys up north, get the repairs
done immediately

Its been snowing for a couple of hours here in Brooklyn... hard. Im at work now watching the beautiful white blanket fall.
OMR... I'm pretty sure you are allowed to withhold rent in this situation. Id look into it/ call 311. He cant kick you out for complaining. In fact, if youve been there for 6 or more months, you have squatters rights. Complicated issues, but if he is that much of a prick, might be worth looking into...

there's no such thing as squatters rights anymore, especially
not when the owner of the property is known, if I'm not
mistaken, squatting is illegal in new york

Ya boston is in for it supposedly, my college final was called off today. Its 1:20 and I havent seen a snowflake yet.  Hey OP, is it oil heat? Cuz if so I can drive down from Boston and fix it for ya!  Travel time is chargeable of course :wink:

When I lived in Seattle, I heated our whole condo by keeping the oven on 350F all winter with the oven door closed.  For a mild climate like 27F, it should at least keep the chill off.  Be glad you're not where I live now with no heat. . .

Get one of these bad boys (or just a similar style, I have no experience with this particular model) http://www.todaysconcept.com/honeywell-hz708-radiator-heater.html from Sears or something.  Save the receipt and take it out of your rent for the month.  They kick out a lot of heat and are real good as far as energy conservation goes.
