Hickory nuts

They taste good but it is very time consuming to get the meat out of the shell.  Anyone know a trick to this?  I have gathered about 2 gallons of them, but it takes me a good half hour to shell 5...and I still loose lots of the meat.

The type is Mockernut hickory, the shells are extremely hard.

Mockernuts are tough to crack, the other ones, Pignut and Shagbark Hickories, I've cracked, are
easier to get the meat from, but it's still a lot of work.

Are you using a nutpick to get the meat out of the shells?

the indians down here in florida used to crush them in water and ferment them to make hickory "black liquor" or something like that.

but yes, i love the taste, but not the effort to get them out.

I am actually using a nut pick and a tack to get the pieces out.  Those little sections don't give in very easily and usually squish or break.  I have a half a cup at this point, but I will just keep doing a few at a time and eventually get through the whole bag.  It has been suggested that I make hickory nut fudge with them, but I am not a cook, so no.

Lol, maybe I am. :cool: I certainly FEEL like one.  I haven't worked on shelling anymore since the other day so I am still just up to a half cup.  The weather is either to cold or too rainy to sit outside and crack them.  No way I am doing them in the house and step on one of those @#$%@^# shells.
