is there anything other than spider mites which can cause a slightly corky discoloration?
Would taking a cutting from caespitosa possibly change the lush green color of the motherplant without it being related to infestation?

no, taking a pup from a mother plant will not cause any harm to the plant.

if you have any type of scabbing/corking on a loph, 99 times out of 100 it will be spidermite related, especially if growing indoors.

Do they tend to show up more inside?

definitely :yesnod:

the only time i've ever had problems with mites is when growing indoors under lights...
mother nature tends to keep the critters somewhat under control when they are outside...
the little buggers can get out of control much more easily in indoor conditions, same with most bugs...
