Hello there! I am new here.
Can anyone please help me. I have a 5 y.o. peyote button. About one inch in diameter. I wasnt home for a while (3 months) And it wasnt watered that long. And when I got back my peyote looked like this (see pic).
I was told that if I am not sure if I watered it or not i shouldnt water it until next time. Also I was told that they are very touhg - that they can live for a long time without water.
I am preety sure that somethig is wrong with it. But what? An more important HOW CAN I FIX IT?? I am not a plant person so I dont know much about growing plants. But I am wlling to learn.
I am watering it every second day now. The temperature here is about 35 degrees Celzius (98 Fahrenheit)
Can I fix this with some substance or ingridient for soil?
Please help me, i dont want this one to die cause it is the only one that much old.
Thanks in advance.

I'm no expert man, but I would say that's FAR too much water...it's a cactus, it lives in the desert naturally. Your problem up there, to me, looks like some sort of fungal growth, probably closely related to the overwatering. I'd wait for a second opinion though. Also your soil doesn't look like anything other than regular potting soil, and if so it probably doesn't have proper drainage. Another factor that could add up to some fungal growth. Growing things takes practice, but I hope you don't lose that nice loph in the process.

My guess would be overwatering, but I'm new to this. It seems like a good temperature, though.
Peace.

What does the cactus feel like? Is it mushy, or just pasty and pliable, are those brown spots hard and calloused or mushy. Anything else you can describe would be helpful too.

My guess is that while you were gone someone watered it for you and watered it too much. When you got back, you disregarded the advice you had been given about them not needing much water and started watering like mad. Every two days is way too much. I don't know if it'll recover or not but your only hope is to let it dry out. After it dries, it won't need water more than once a month at the most at least until it gets over the rot which hopefully it will.

I guess you might as well cut the button off of the roots and eat it.
Peace.

no folks, I think you didnt understand me.
I think that the stage of cacti that is in now is cause d bu NOT watering for 3 months.
and my reaction to that is watering it every second day. BUT, I did that onlu 2 imes (in last 4 days), hoping I can keep up his moisture with that. I sea now that was wrong. i am stoped that.
but the thing is that it was already like that before I started watering it.
@neuro: the cacti hardness is the sam in every part. and the hardness is the same as he was when I bought. or maby a little mushier, but not notisable.
@franks00: u gave me the proportion of the soils. does that mean I should mix them in that ratio or tu put 3 parts of coarse sand on the bottom, 1 part of loam in the middle and 1 part of leaf mold on the top.
I have only regular plant's soil and beach sand. can that help? does the sand on the top help something or just as a decoration (I saw that somewhere)
Thanks guys...

To me this really looks like overwatering. I?m sure someone really gave it way to much water. You can clearly see the difference, unless you gave it that much. If so, how are the other plants doing in your home? The durt he suggested has to be mixed btw. I love cactusses, and they love me back. They always give me flowers.

The problem is too much water and the substrate not drain with facility. The portions are approximate, mix all or use prepared substrate for cacti and add 1 part of sand. Peyote needs little vegetal matter. If you use beach sand boil before using... http://www.erowid.org/plants/peyote/peyote_cactus_guide.shtml http://www.peyote.net/archive/culti2.htm http://www.shaman-australis.com/users/earthalchemy/cultivation-sacred-cacti.html

thanks guys. I'm gonna replant it in dryer soil. will that help?
the oter one (see the pic) is doing fine (despite he was treated the same way as the big one). it is not even 2 years old, 1/3 inch in diameter for the first time now I can sea some progress, but only in the hihgt...
do you have any advice about the small brothers growing from the big "sick" one? shoud I separate them now or should I wait unil (and if) it gets better?
