Wacom Graphic Tablets ??????
    #9435169 -

Anyone familiar w/ Wacom tablets?  I'm thinking about getting an intuos3 6x8.  It's a bit of an investment so I could use some experienced input.

I have an 8x10 Intuos, the original serial-adapter model.

What do you want to know about it?

is it worth the $$ ?  There's other brands out there but from what I gather Wacom is the standard.  I basically touch up photos, create web graphics.. basically alot of cs3/Ai work.  I don't know if the 6x8 work space has any drawbacks etc.

Well, I mean, they work well.

It's basically going to make anything with a lot of curved strokes easier to create in a natural way. (ie, not with the pen tool.)

As far as the surface area is concerned, I would recommend getting whatever you can afford. They'll all "work," but it scales the input area to your screen size, so you're basically paying for a higher resolution input with the larger ones.

I own one and im pretty fond of it.

It's pretty much ideal for sketching and digital painting.. not as if I'm good at it but there's definetly a big difference between using a tablet and a mouse.

Whether it's a good idea to buy one depends on what you'd like to do with it. Oh well, it can lead to a shift in working style anyway.

I sometimes use mine instead of a mouse while just doing regular things on the computer.

Well yes and no.  They do work like that, but you can also set a tablet to work in "mouse mode", which means that you can use a small tablet to cover any size screen by lifting the pen off and putting it down at the other edge when you run out of space, the same way you lift up your mouse and move it back across your desk when you run out of room.

I fully recommend the Wacom Bamboo, they're cheap as anything and fantastic tablets.  I use mine in mouse mode, with the sensitivity set very fine so I can do detail work.

Oh and I use it for exactly what you're using yours for - touching up photos, web graphic work, etc.  The Bamboo size is perfect for that.  If I was doing painting or art, I'd probably get a bigger one.

Wacom is the alpha and omega when it comes to Tablets. I have the Intous 2 XD w/ a live area of about 8x11, it works really well. I have seen a lot of artists doing fantastic things with the Bamboo lately, so surface area isn't the be-all end-all. If you can train yourself with those dimensions than the cost savings will be worth it for you. Personally I bought that specific tablet size because I am a traditionally trained artist, so I am most comfortable with my tablet set at the angle of a drafting table, with the ability to record large strokes.

It is worth noting that there is little benefit to the tablet outside of organic painting or texture work. If you do vector artwork, Flash based graphics, catalog layouts with InDesign, or perform a lot of highly technical CAD/CAM or Illustration work than you will find very little uses for the tablet. If you do concept art, matte painting or anything along those lines it is right up your alley.

One of these days I'm going to pick up a Cintiq just for the hell of it... always wanted one to put me into sci-fi overdrive
