Well here is a simple question. I ordered 12 pre-sterilized pint jars from Micron Magick and inoculated 3 of them. After I innoculated i put the lid back on with the rubber seal downward like they came. Is that how I want to do it? Or should the rubber part be facing up? After gettin some growth I am going to take of the lid and just use the filter discs, but i want to get to that point! :smile:

Why did you take the lid off to begin with? The reason the rubber edge is up is during PCing because it will form a vaccum seal otherwise potentially contaminating your jars when you innoculate.

if you don't take the lid off, you can't innoculate them. there are no holes in the lid and a filter between the lid and jar. i left the rubber part facing up like they shipped them.

So guys is it rubber up allowing some air or is it rubber down for now making it air tight???

Nah Since it has filter disks just go buy some new lids (just the disk peice Not the screw on cap) There about a dollar. Dril 1/2-3/4 inch holes in the middle of them and replace the disk parts rubber face down. You will now get air to the jars.

Leaving the rubber part down causes the vacuum seal (previously stated). So when you take off the lid to inoculated, outside air is sucked in, potentially contaminating the jar. Leave the rubber part facing up, it is still a pretty tight seal, it doesn't need to be air tight. If you have holes in the jar lid for inoculation, then it doesn't matter.
