basic wine recipe to distill
    #9043625 - 10/07/08 05:15 PM (15 years, 5 months ago)

Ok..so if I'm making a wine for the sole purpose of distilling, it should be simple and easy right?

I figure that - water, sugar, yeast and lime/lemon juice - should be sufficient.

But for a 1 gallon or just about a 4L batch..what is the ratio?

I've read to use

-3 & 1/2 LBS to 3 & 1/2 CUPS of sugar
- 1 teaspoon of yeast

somebody help me with how much sugar n yeast I should use

i dunno how much to use and i was actually just wondering this same question:

what is the water/sugar ratio if i want to make alcohol with just sugar and water?

little over 1/2gal of 20% makes like 2-3 cups of 60% alc.

I tried wine for distillation a while back and it didn't work out.

Have you ever tried turbo yeast?

I have not, just baker's yeast...it's hard to acquire the good stuff.

I just let the wine ferment for a couple of weeks, filter any sediment and throw it in the wok still ( got that from here).

what size fermentor do u have to work with? ide suggest at LEAST a kilo of sugar per 5gal that your fermenting. i tried varying amounts recently for the kicks of it, not to distill but just for some cheap alcohol.
i used 3gal fermentors, and used about 1-2 pounds of sugar in each, and they are fermenting quite well.

if you buy a gravity meter it comes in real handy, not only can you figuer out the max that you can add and get fermentation, you will also be able to figuer out how much of it the yeast is using.  they make real tiny ones you can leave in the container to, so you can see each day how much the little buggers eat and keep them on a proper diet:evil:

Last year I made a 5 gallon container of alcohol by combining somewhere around 4lbs (not sure of this number) of turbinado sugar to 5 gallons of water.  Distilling was a great success.

is that wine?

its not its a simple sugar wash, the thing is though lower the percentage before distilling the product, the less harsh it's going to be and less you are going to have to soak it in carbon, anyways i just used to brew 8kgs of sugar in 25lt of water with turbo yeast, and you end up with nearly 5 lts of nearly pure alcohol 94-96%, harsh as and the longer it has to sit in carbon. 2 years later with some flavor it taste just as good/smooth as the black labels
