Stalling Casings
    #938855 - 10/07/02 06:47 AM (21 years, 5 months ago)

I made casings a while ago, they arent flushing:

Cased - 4 to 6 weeks ago...
Casing material - 50/50 vermiculite, potting soil.

I used spent cakes which did yield fruit. Within a few days of casing, I did see mycilum growth. The growth seemed fairly vigorous and healthy.

After that initial growth, the one casing produced a couple of mushroms, which grew very slowly, and to a small size.

The casing material has not been fully colonized, though white puffs of mycilum are peeking through.

The casing has a fairly standard setup. About an inch of pure vermiculite at the bottom, a layer of cut up cakes, and about an inch of 50/50 mixture.

There is and never has been any sign of contam, temperature varies between 22-27 Celcius, with manual spraying twice daily.

Whats the deal?!?!

Sounds like they ran out of nutrients. You'd be better off to use spent cakes to spawn some straw or poo than to straight case. Also the casing layer sounds pretty thick for using spent cakes. I think 1/4-1/2 inch would have produced better results.

Agreed spent cakes totally blow - I go for fresh cakes all the time its the only way to go mainly for me because I don't have the space to accomidate for all these grows. 2 tanks sucks=(

spent cakes makes no difference? it just introduces myceli to the new crop. it all depends on how much nutrients are in ur substrate.
kinda like a hand off in football, (lame EXP) as soon as myceli starts growing on the new crop, u could remove the spent cake, but i makes no difference

WightCanadian: This makes sense to me too. Which tells me that the soil must be crap. In which case, what kind of soil (or mixture) is known to work well?

The problem is that you didn't introduce new nutrients as stated above.

The casing layer is fine. It shouldn't have nutrients so contams cant get a foot hold.

Just crumpling spent cakes shouldn't work. The little flush you got was from the little bit of nutrients left in the cakes. Crumbling spent cakes onto poo or straw will because it gives them something else to eat.

hope this helps
