Photoshop help.
    #9304129 -

I'm doing a favor for a friend of the family and touching up some grad pics of her daughter and she wants them 8.5" x 11" when they're done.  My printer isn't the greatest so I may just give her the JPEGS but my problem is getting the picture sized right.  If I start a new file and specify it to 8.5" x 11" the picture is HUGE.  I have to look at it around 30% or lower to fit in on the screen.  Will the actual image print out the right size?  It just doesn't seem like 8.5" x 11" on screen, it looks more like 2 feet x 3 feet.  I've never had to do this with real photos before, at least not in the professional sense.  It's always been custom projects where exact size isn't an issue.

The dpi is key there...

If it's 8x10 at 96 dpi, the image will be 768 x 960 and it will print like shit.

If it's 8x10 at 300 dpi, the image will be 2400 x 3000 and it will be photo quality.

It will...You may want to outline the page with like a grey color...Just a very small line so that you can make sure your printer will print it correctly.

My old printer I had trouble, and I had to either downsize it or make it larger to fit the paper exactly. I can't really remember.

That's lower than screen resolution... it will look decent on webpages, and when displayed on a monitor...

If you print that, it will be pixelated like a mother fucker.

72/96 dpi = screen
300 dpi = print

That's a good idea.  I didn't want to waste ink to find out myself.  I'm basically blowing up wallet sized shots so I told her it's probably not going to be anything like that the school would hand her.

They will look very blurry... 5x7's upsample decently to 8x10, but anything smaller, especially wallets, will look crappy blown up to portrait size.

Yea, blowing up some shots is difficult to make look decent. Hm, I'm not too good with resolutions etc so I am of no more use.

I do know there are a few programs that works decent. The best being alienware image enlarger...Something like that, but basically all it does it enlarge the picture by 110% each time. So, by enlarging it 110% a bunch of times your picture will look BETTER, but it's still going to suck.

If you do a high resolution scan, and send it to me I have a program that does an OKAY job at it, but like I said it's not going to be perfect.

You just can't add information that isn't there when enlarging.
