Well, I can see that noone is interested in the lthis lime for their casings, but I just wanted to post a follow up and say that it works great! I used it in conjunction with the vodka-bacteria-tech and all is VERY well. Fast healthy colonization.

DUDE! I was just searchin on this topic, funny its current. Anyway I am doing 50/50+ and all I found right away was hydrated lime at Home Depot (I know now crushed oyster shell is found in pet store) Anyway I put 1 heaping tablespoon in with 6 cups verm/peat, thing that's too much or not enough..... PH tested after mixing to 7.5 or so, I hope that after pressur cooking it might nutralize more of the peat and come back to 6.5 - 7 or soo...

7.5 is fine, don't worry. You should consider using the vodka tech. Bring the mixed soil up to desired mositure content with a 5% vodka solution. Let it sit for five days in a semi-sealed container (enough air for gas exchange but not so much that it dries out). Then apply to substrate as normal. The vodka promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria and will keep your casing from getting contaminated. Sterilizing the casing is a bad idea - it lowers its ability to fight of infection.Good luck

Vodka, thats a great idea!!! So if you don't sterilize the casing, then do you pasturize it? What kind of effect does the vodka tek have on Trichoderma? Also cobweb mold? The vodka tek sounds like it could be very helpfull, because alot of people have trouble with casing. Anymore info on it would benefit many people.

There is a thread started by Ripper on it. Basically you just mix a 5% solution of H20 and Vodka (5% Vodka and 95% H2O). Let it sit for five days and then apply as normal. It is working great for me now, nice healthy colonization of the substrate. And no, you DO NOT pasteurize it. The vodka promotes bacteria that is beneficial to mycelium but precludes other molds from gaining a foot hold.Good luck
