New Gym Patch!
    #9096825 -

Found a new Gym patch on the way home from picking a cyan patch.

They have bluing at the base of the stems and some have bluing on the edges of the caps. I'll post pics of the bluing once my cam battery recharges.

Senor,
Got any idea of the species? These definitely aren't luteofolius and they seem different than the sapineus I've been finding recently.

Could these be G. spectabilis?

Have you tried the gyms on the west coast?

I have read gyms on the west coast are usually not active, is that true?

I don't know about sapineus/penetrans. The luteos I picked are definitely active. On par with cubes.

You can tell these are active.

The Gyms I just found today only slightly bruise on the cap edges and on the mycelium at the base of the stem.

I'm just wondering what species these new ones are. They look different than both the luteos and sapineus.

The whole west vs east coast as far as potency goes is only for Gymnopilus spectabilis. Supposedly west coast varieties aren't active while east coast ones are.

Luteo's are always active as far as I know.

the rumor is that the spectabilis/junonius that grow over here arent active like their east coast counterparts as blimey says.

the luteofolius around here most definitely are active.

I would love to find some gyms here in ny one of these days.

What specifically should I be looking for?  Do you often find them with the gill surface upturned like in the first picture posted?

Most of the mature ones I find have upturned caps like that.

Is blueing the best indicator for actives? What else bruises blue?

Boletes, mushrooms with pores instead of gills, can bruise very blue without being active at all.  Many gilled mushrooms that bruise blue can be active, only a few are not.

Nice!

Do you eat them fresh? How bitter are they?

I've only eaten them dry. When they are dry they taste better than dried cubes.

I've tasted a fresh piece before and while it was slightly bitter it was nowhere as nasty or bitter as they are claimed to be.

I just tasted a piece of a new Gym species I found today and it was very bitter.

I'd say luteofolius is the best tasting Gym out of the 3 I have tasted. Luteofolius, sapineus and the new ones.

Cool find, you've been on a roll recently. Have the sapineus you've found been active too?

Haven't tried the sapineus yet. I think they are active though. They tend to have these little dark spots on the caps which always look dark gray but it might be bruising.

The luteos and these new ones have definite bluing/greening though. The luteos more so.

I've had good luck hunting the last few years in the PNW. I have 20/15 vision which might help

Always do a spore print to make sure. Some mushrooms can look alike, but have different colored spore prints.

These are definitely not G. spectabilis.  The spores are undersized with a different ornamention.  The spores measured 6.7-8.1 X 4.1-4.8 microns; the size 7.4 X 4.4 being repeated many times.

I've run down the monograph several times just looking at spore size and activity.  Next I'll compare the macro features and offer a few possibilities, hopefully narrowing it down to a single species.  Without gill, stem or cap tissue it might be difficult to pin down.
Do you have lists from local clubs that give the various Gym species found and identified?

Gymnopilus liquiritae has the dots.  Was the stem hollow?  Can you remember the color of the flesh under the cap?  Do you think the log was a conifer?

*Note:  They aren't G. sapineus either.  I've just finished with those from your other collection.

I found that one in my Falcon Guide "North American Mushrooms". It supposedly grows from northern North America south to Tennessee, but I can't verify that because I've never actually looked for it.

I'll look for local lists on species.

I'll check the flesh color and the stems next time I go check on the patch.

I can tell you that when I printed these they wreaked a strong earthy smell. My whole room smelled like it was filled with fresh potting soil.

The container I printed them in had to be washed 4 times to remove the smell.

Are these in fact a type of Gymnopilus based on the spores?

EDIT:
Here's a key to PNW Gymnopilus - SVIMS Key
