So somehow even with Peer Guardian NBC caught me downloading some of their shows, as I've received another email from my ISP about it.

At what point will they start doing something?  Should I be worried?

Who is your ISP? If it's Comcast, I would lay off for a while. Two strikes means you're pushing it already, and they have a bad reputation.

I'm using Charter, and I get my torrents from isohunt.com, so yeah probably public trackers.  I've got no invites :sad:

Whoa... how the hell do they catch you?  I used to pirate stuff left and right but haven't since itunes really... I use my azureus once in a while for movies but that's about it.

It seems like only NBC does...I download all sorts of shit, but in like July I got a notice from them too.

peer to peer trafficking is VERY easy to sniff out. my college shuts off your internet within like 30 minutes of attempting to download a torrent.

i don't know exactly how they do it, but i figure it probably has to do with tracking the IPs of the packets everyone receives. getting packets from something like 300+ IPs at once would be pretty much impossible without some kind of sharing software.

I've gotten 2 or 3 from nbc w/comcast and nothing ever happened. I use verizon fios now and have yet to get anything. I mostly use private trackers though in the past ~6 months or so. They're faster and often have better quality torrents. I'd give you an invite but I don't have any atm. I don't think NBC will (can?) sue you or anything, worst case is Charter cuts off your service and you gotta find a new isp.

edit: are you using encyption? I forget how to turn it on off hand, but I know you can in azureus. Google for it.

I'm just using BitTorrent, so I don't think there is an encryption option.  I'll probably switch to Azureus...

Its not that, the people that own the shows pretend to seed the file, so that when you connect to them to attempt to download it they've got your ip address.

This is why public trackers are bad.. cause anyone can upload whatever they want. I've downloaded 100s of GBs of data over the last few months using private trackers, with no repercussions (touch wood).

I've heard bad things about Charter as well, my buddy has them and has gotten notices for downloading things.  I use SBC and I haven't had problems yet, but I mainly only download craploads of anime via torrents.  Think they'll bug me about those?

i'd like to know this, too... i mostly use isohunt for movies / tv-shows since it works pretty well... thank god i'm in germany and no one has ever contacted me about it, but it is definitely something i'd like to avoid...

i use ilovetorrents.com every once in a while, but they're not that up to date with movies and shows...

For most private trackers you have to be invited. Some will have open registration and you can join that way, mostly new sites that are trying to start up. There's plenty, they pop up all the time. I can't really tell you how to find them though, I haven't been looking in awhile and I forget.

You can buy yourself a proxy for like $5 bucks a month. It's in Sweden I think, and the laws there don't give a shit about copyrights. At least not much. You can use your proxy through an encrypted tunnel and never worry again.
